Have Fun in the Sun the
Safe Way
Skin cancers are the most common and preventable
type of cancer in Canada. 90% of skin cancers are
caused by exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Skin
cancer can be identified as abnormally dark/discoloured
areas or sores that do not heal.
When the UV index is 3 or higher:
 Limit time in the direct sun between 11am-3pm
 Find shade from trees, umbrellas or buildings
 Wear hats with wide brims to cover ears, face, &
back of neck
 Wear loose-fitting, light weight clothing that covers
arms & legs
 Wear sunglasses that cover entire eye
 Use SPF 30 or higher sunscreen
 Apply sunscreen 20mins before going out; reapply
every 2hrs & after sweating or swimming
 Drink lots of water
