Have Fun in the Sun the Safe Way Skin cancers are the most common and preventable type of cancer in Canada. 90% of skin cancers are caused by exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Skin cancer can be identified as abnormally dark/discoloured areas or sores that do not heal. When the UV index is 3 or higher: Limit time in the direct sun between 11am-3pm Find shade from trees, umbrellas or buildings Wear hats with wide brims to cover ears, face, & back of neck Wear loose-fitting, light weight clothing that covers arms & legs Wear sunglasses that cover entire eye Use SPF 30 or higher sunscreen Apply sunscreen 20mins before going out; reapply every 2hrs & after sweating or swimming Drink lots of water City of Hamilton.
