Hoary Puccons Presentations notes 4 thermistors were placed at different 1, 4, 8, 11 cm in the glades 1, 5, 9, 14 cm in forest 2009 Glade Thermistor As Depth increases, temperature variation decreases over time There is a greater variation of temperature at shallow depths because of the heat from direct sunlight There is a lower variation of temperature at deeper depths because of there is only conduction heat, no heat from direct sunlight. Latent Heat 2009 Glade, Forest Comparison Forest is more saturated with water, so water at greater depths, therefore less change in temperature at greater depths due to waters high specific heat capacity. Less change at greater depths 2008&2009 Glade Thermistor Comparison: 2008 Glade thermistor has less temperature change than 2009 Glade thermistor because 2009 soil was very wet, and therefore temperature change is limited from water’s high specific heat capacity. At 10 cm depth the temperature change for 2009 is 8 degrees while 2008 is 10 degrees, not a big variation Added precipitation has a greater effect on temperature variation at shallower depths than deeper depths. 2009 Forest Less temperature variation Latent Heat 2008&2009 Forest Thermistor Comparison: 2009 is colder than 2008 ISSUE: 2008 temperature variation at greater depths is less than 2009 variation?????? Same depth with temperature change trend as glades WEATHER STATION: 2009 Temp and Dewpt. When temp. and dew pt. are equal it is precipitating, the dew pt. decreases when precipitation stops and temperature increases. Dew Pt. equals temp. at night, and around 8-9AM, temperature increases, decreasing the dew pt. because more water can be held within warmer air. 2008&2009 Temp. Dew Pt. Comparison: Dew pt. is higher because air is warmer and therefore holds more water 2009 Wind Speed: At start of recording, wind speed is higher due to stormy weather, another factor of cooler temperatures due to change in sensible heat from turbulent exchange of wind 2008&2009 Wind Speed: Less wind in 2008 than 2009 contributing to higher temperatures in 2008. 2009 Relative Humidity: High humidity from 6PM to 8AM at around 100% relating to dew point equaling temperature, causing rain. Humidity decreases when temperature increases 2008&2009 Humidity: For 2009 rained night before (100%humidity) while 2008 did not rain 100% humidity for both early in morning Both decreased between 8-9AM 2009 Solar Radiation: 0 between 6PM and 8AM because night Increases as sun comes out Peak at 3PM Has a small peak at 10AM (clouds?) 2008&2009 Solar Radiation: 2009 peaks later in day 2008 peaks higher than 2009
