Study guide for Exam 4
1. Know the states of matter and the terms used to describe how one state can become another
(liquid to a gas, solid to a liquid, etc.). Know the difference between humidity and relative
humidity and how they can change. Understand how adiabatic cooling and the dew point can
form clouds, fog and dew, and know the types of each. Be able to explain how air can become
uplifted to produce stable and unstable air masses.
2. Know the roots of cloud names so that you could describe any given cloud. Understand how
the various forms of precipitation form. Know how wind forms, what influences it and the
differences between cyclones and anticyclones. Know the wind belts of the world, how they
form and how they influence the climate of the world. Be able to use the major air masses of the
United States to explain weather systems. Be able to define sea breeze, land breeze, cold front
and warm front and the conditions associated with each of the fronts.
3. Understand and be able to describe all of the things that can result from a low pressure
system, including the affects and associated conditions of thunderstorms and hurricanes.
4. Know the general facts related to the planets of our solar system and other bodies flying
through space. Understand the life and death of a star. Be able to define red giant, nebula,
neutron star, black hole and white dwarf. Understand how changes in the Earth/Sun relationship
can control glaciation events.
