Ordering America: How the Progressive Era and the Eugenics Movement Shaped Our Society June 26-28 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. DePaul University Lincoln Park Campus The eugenics movement in the early 1900s was an important and ugly component of the Progressive Era that attracted heads of state, teachers, philanthropists, journalists and ordinary citizens. Eugenicists believed that some “races,” classes and individuals were superior to others. They advocated for policies that created an “orderly society” based on who should be treated as superior and inferior. By examining events from this period, participants will learn how this history helped shape the present and consider how we as individuals and members of groups can make a difference in the world today. The Summer Institute is designed for all educators, including teachers of all subjects and working in all grade levels, counselors and educational leaders. Participants will: • Gain important insight into the study of civics and democracy by understanding the critical decision-making done during the social movements in the Progressive Era. • Learn about how prejudices and other preconceived notions can distort scientific inquiry and the dangers of resolving complex problems by dividing the world into us and them. • Learn pedagogical approaches for building safe and engaging classroom and school communities. DePaul is offering this three-day seminar free to the first 50 individuals who register! • Earn up to 21 CPDUs. • Receive teacher resource materials. • Make a lifelong connection to Facing History and Ourselves support and resources. • Connect with the DePaul University community and become a part of the DePaul University and Facing History and Ourselves Collaboration participant network. Breakfast, lunch and refreshments provided. Register online at tinyurl.com/2017SumInsRegistration or contact Rawan Alfuraih at [email protected].
