Chris Newsome, Director of Asset Management,
Anglian Water
Chris joined Anglian Water in 2004. He is responsible for
all aspects of asset management. He is currently managing
the five-year AMP5 Capital Programme of £2bn. This
requires the establishment of the infrastructure for growth
and adaption for the effects of climate change. Chris is a
Civil Engineer and has spent 30 years of his career within
the water industry, managing, planning and designing
capital programmes of work. Anglian Water provides the
East of England – an area covering c 20% of England and
Wales with a population of 5.5m – with drinking water and
wastewater services.

Glenn joined Anglian Water in 2000. He is responsible for

Drink Federation
David has worked at FDF on environment and
sustainability issues for several years. He is currently
working on the implementation of FDF’s sustainability
policy, including its flagship brand for action on the
environment, the Five-Fold Environmental Ambition,
launched in October 2007. The Food and Drink Federation
is the voice of the UK food and drink industry, the largest
manufacturing sector in the country.

Dr Joe Short, Technical Manager, SKM Enviros
Joe has a PhD in organic waste treatment from the Open
University, and has been working in the organic waste
treatment sector for over ten years. He has been involved
with a number of composting and anaerobic digestion
projects, including the design and installation of a
number of in-vessel composting plants. Joe is currently
providing support and advice to Scottish Water during the
procurement, construction and commissioning of its first
>1MW food waste AD facility. Joe is also currently involved
as technical adviser in a number of AD projects in South
East Asia to treat palm oil mill effluent.

Patti Quintana, Business Customer Technical Services
Manager, Anglian Water
Patti joined Anglian Water in 2000. She is responsible
for delivery of technical services to business customers,
maximising efficiency, minimising water and wastewater
costs and compliance with environmental regulation. Her
experience includes process engineering for Anglian Water
capital programmes, managing wastewater treatment sites
for high industrial waste and innovation development projects,
including the production of high-purity water from sewage
final effluent and gasification of sewage sludge for energy.

MANAGEMENT
• Drains are the last point of asset protection consideration
• Drains failures and cleaning can represent up to 20% of
maintenance and asset replacement costs
• The traditional mechanical separators are no longer
adequate with change in use by the food industry
• Innovation in fats, oils and grease liquefiers can offer an
alternate solution to cleaning and asset protection

Cranfield. His current responsibilities include identifying
technology trends in the built environment, sustainable
product development, corporate partnerships and
developing technologies to bring them to market. BRE is a

impartial, research-based consultancy, testing and training
organisation, offering expertise in every aspect of the built
environment and associated industries. BRE helps clients

This session gives delegates the opportunity to debate

15:30ANAEROBIC DIGESTION AND INDUSTRIAL
APPLICATIONS
• What is anaerobic digestion?
• Description of the plant required
• Practical applications
Peter Hough, Director, Weltec BioPower
Peter joined Weltec in 2009, and has been working within
anaerobic digestion for two years after a career within the
agriculture industry. Weltec BioPower GmbH was founded in
2001 by parent companies Stallkamp – stainless-steel tank
fabricators, and WEDA – pumping and control specialists.
Weltec has over 200 anaerobic digestion plants in operation
in Europe and around the world. There are three plants in
operation in the UK and a number under construction.
15:50REDUCING WATER CONSUMPTION IN FOOD
FACTORIES USING ICE PIGGING
• Ice pigging is now in use in Bristol Water (cleaning trunk
mains)
• Limited experimental work suggests that ice pig should
reduce water consumption in once-through flushing
operations by a factor of 100 plus
• Prototype kit has been designed, is being tested and
preliminary results will be presented
Joe Quarini, Professor of Process Systems in Mechanical
Engineering Department, University of Bristol
Joe left the Atomic Energy Authority (Harwell) in 1993 to
take up his post at the University of Bristol where he teaches
and undertakes academic research in the general area of
thermofluids. For the past ten years his major research
themes have been associated with ice slurry technology.
This technology has been adapted to provide enhanced
shear and thereby cleaning capacity in complex topologies.
The technology is beginning to be successfully adopted
within the water supply industry as a means of cleaning
potable water supply pipes. Joe and his PhD students are
supporting Bristol Water in its ice pigging operations.

revisit the legislation and discuss topics that still cause
