THE EFFECT OF ACTIVITY
ON AIR QUALITY WITHIN
THE HOME
ENVIRONMENT
AMANDA BRADBURY
SLOAN 20 HOME STUDY
• One year study on the temporal and
seasonal variation of microbes within15
Boulder, Colorado homes.
• How daily activities effect what microbes
are found within residences.
PURPOSE
• Implement and include the data
collected from the ozone and
VOC aeroqual series 500 instruments.
• Set up and collect PM10,
CO2, CO, temperature, and microbial
data
BACKGROUND
• Ozone reacts with VOCs
• Microbes are capable of releasing VOCs into the
surrounding environment which dominates which
organisms will thrive or regress in a particular
community.
• Fungal growth rate and enzyme activity are greatly
influences by VOCs released by bacteria.
HYPOTHESIS
• If ozone and VOC levels are
inversely proportional and VOC and
microbial growth is proportional, then an
increase in ozone would show a
decrease in the diversity of microbes and
VOC concentrations.
SET UP
CONCLUSIONS
• There are various aspects
of an individuals home
life that could be altered
in order to make a
healthier and happier
home environment.
• The ozone and VOC
monitors will be
implemented upon their
arrival.
