Project Summary This supplement will take approximately 30 students from Eastside High School’s Oceanography Club on a series of field experiences. Members of the oceanography club ultimately participate on the National Ocean Sciences Bowl. As the Bowl is restricted to 5, or at the most 10, participants of the club, this NSF supplement will device activities to maintain the students’ interest in Marine Sciences. Field experiences will require trips from Gainesville, Florida, to Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts as follows. On the first trip, students will participate in University of Florida’s Seahorse Key open house on the gulf coast in October 2015. On the same trip they will also explore a marsh habitat and deploy a seine from the beach to identify what they catch. On the second trip in November 2015, students will travel to Anastasia State Park on the Atlantic coast, to learn about beach and lagoon processes. They will also visit the Bioscience Facility of Whitney Labs of the University of Florida. On the third trip in January 2016, they will go to Matanzas inlet and collect oceanographic data from a bridge that crosses a tidal inlet. On the fourth trip in February 2016, students will travel to Tampa Florida to visit the Aquarium and to watch and participate at the Ocean Sciences Bowl. On the fifth and final trip, students will travel to Melbourne Beach Florida, Barrier Island Sanctuary to observe sea turtles laying eggs and dissect a squid. All these trips are within 3 hours of Gainesville and will require students to report on the concepts learned on each trip.
