Fish in a Fishtank
If God knows all things, then why did He create the world knowing that humans would end up in
hell? How could God create some people knowing full well that their life will be full of misery and
suffering? Why did God create the angel Lucifer knowing full well that Lucifer would develop
immense pride and become Satan, God's adversary.
These questions are normal to ask. Humans want answers - and not vague answers. We want
real and genuine answers. Our minds are highly intelligent even though we actually only use a
small portion of them. The harsh fact is that we cannot understand the answers to these
questions. Yes, we can articulate the best probable answer, but when faced with these
questions, we need to take a step back and pause for a moment prior to responding. Pause?
Yes, pause.
I like to think of a fish in a fish-tank. You remember your gold fish from your childhood days.
That gold fish could teach us a lot. Let me explain.
A fish only knows what's in their fish-tank. That's their world. Nothing more, nothing less. They
see their food, the coral that was placed in their tank, and the mini pebbles that make up their
ocean floor. That's it. If the fish were told of anything that resided outside their tank, they would
not be able to comprehend it. They comprehend everything that they were given to
comprehend, but to tell them of anything else would be futile. Let me explain further.
Suppose for example that you could verbally communicate with the gold fish. Just for fun, let's
say you become a gold fish and are placed in the same tank. One day, while swimming with
your new friend, you strike up a conversation. You begin by telling the fish that this tank is
located in a house. Then you continue to say that this house is 2,500 square feet. You go on to
say this house is located in quaint town in Connecticut which is part of 50 states that make up a
country called the United States of America. You don't stop. You say that this country is a fairly
large country of the planet Earth, which is part of a group of planets that rotates around the sun.
This sun is a star made up of various gases and is actually small relative the the large stars in
the Milky Way Galaxy that consists of billion of stars. This galaxy spins next to its neighbor
galaxy Andromeda. These galaxies are part of a bigger area of space known as the Local
Group.
At this point, the fish to whom you are speaking is shaking with fear and has no words to say.
There are no words to say. He doesn't know where to begin. A house? What's a house?
Andromeda? What? You begin to explain to the fish details but he has no idea of what you
mean. Their world IS the fish tank. That's it. Science has come along way, but no matter how
hard we try, explaining the advances in astrophysics to a fish would prove pointless. The fish
just cannot understand. It's not in their fish-tank.
It's the same way with humans. In this life, we are never going to receive answers to some of
the questions we ask because our minds cannot comprehend the answers. The answers are
there, but I believe that God's thoughts are so much higher than our human thoughts that even
if God would verbally tell us the answers, our minds would not be able to grasp what are ears
hear.
So while we often wrestle with these questions, which is very normal and healthy to do, let's not
forget that there will be a time and a place where we will fully understand these answers. In
heaven, our minds will have a greater capacity for understanding God's ways. Heaven is real
and is eternal and it will take eternity to fully understand Him and His infinite wisdom. It is in
heaven that we will be placed in God's fish-tank!
