Vocabulary Recognition Games BANG! Decorate a coffee can or shoe box. Write vocabulary words on small cards. On several cards, write “BANG!” Place all the cards in the can. Draw a card and say the word. IF you recognize the word, keep the card. Any words you do not know go back into the can. If you draw a “BANG”, all the cards go back into the can and you begin again. FISHING FUN Trace and cut fish from constructions paper. Write a vocabulary word on the fish (or index card) and attach a paper clip. Make a fishing pole with a magnet attached to the end. Catch a fish and say the word. The “fish” goes back in the pond if you do not know the word. LUCKY COINS Glue glitter on the top side of bottle caps (plastic or metal). Write a vocabulary word on the inside. Place face down. Pick a lucky coin, say the word and keep the coin. Count how much “money” you collected. GO FISH Make word cards with multiple word family words. For example, (pill, Jill, dill – bake, snake, lake). The object is to match word family pairs. “Do you have a word with ‘ill’ or do you have a word that rhymes with dill.” CONCENTRATION The same word cards can be used that were made for “GO FISH”. Ten cards are placed face down. The object is to match word family pairs by remembering where they are laid. This game can also be used by preparing vocabulary word pairs. Place ten cards face down.
