Endangered Species Powerpoint Presentation Pick Your Organism By: _______________ Presentation Due: ________________ There are literally hundreds of endangered species throughout the United States. Below you can see how many animals are endangered in each of the 50 states. Endangered Species range in variety from producers to top carnivores, they can be flowers, fish, mammals, or any other living thing that is at risk of going extinct if something is not done to prevent it. Your Assignment: o Choose a species: 1. Go to the Fish and Wildlife Services web page: http://www.fws.gov/endangered/ 2. Find an endangered species you like. If you don’t know what an animal looks like, ‘Google’ images of the species. 3. Find the ‘Scientific Name’ and ‘Common Name’ of the species. 4. Only ONE student per species (in all 4 classes) 5. Enter your information on the www.msleyda.com website by clicking on Endangered Animal Selection List 6. Search to see if anyone else chose yours before you enter it o Fill out the Endangered species data sheet o Make a POWERPOINT PRESENTATION about your endangered species. 6-10 Powerpoint slides o You will email your powerpoint to [email protected] on or before the due date o On the presentation day you will also submit your data sheet o Be prepared to briefly present your powerpoint (~5 minute presentation to your lab group) o You will be graded upon: 1. The quality of your powerpoint (using the rubric to the right) 2. Your data sheet Endangered Species Powerpoint Rubric: Points Possible Include: (Use as a checklist) General Information about the Species: (7pts) Two Pictures or Drawings of your Species Scientific Name (genus & species) Common Name What taxonomic Class is your species in? (ex: mammal) What country or State does it originate? When was it added to the Endangered Species List 2 1 1 1 1 1 Ecosystem Information: (18pts) Habitat: What Biome would you say it lives in? (Ch4-3) Describe the necessary climate it must have. Niche: Role in food web: what eats it and what does it eat? Reproduction? What conditions are necessary for it to mate/have babies? How is its decline affecting the ecosystem where its found? Past and Current Threats that have lowered population size (10pts) Why is the population endangered? What is killing this species? Conservation Plan: (Ch 6 in your textbook will help) (15pts) Describe a 10 year plan that you think will help your species population size increase in the years to come. Also include current or past conservation efforts and how successful they are/were Vocabulary: (10pts) 2 3 5 3 5 10 15 Include 10 vocabulary words throughout your presentation. Must be used in the proper context. Underline or Highlight them. Do not underline the same word twice. Presentation Quality: Correct time use (5-7 min presentation)? Good continuity of slides? Good eye contact / presentation speed? Self Score 10 (5pts) 2 1 1 Total: 65pts Vocabulary to choose from: You may use any vocabulary words that you find in the glossary of your Biology Text book.
