Project Description:
This research investigates using multiple energy sources (flame, lasers) to deposit diamond thin
films on various substrates at room temperature and in open atmosphere. The multiple-energy
processing method used in this project is much more efficient than the traditional CVD method
in diamond deposition. The research objectives are: (1) experimentally investigate the
appropriate precursor gases and processing parameters (laser wavelengths, laser power, focal
spot size etc.) for fast diamond growth; (2) Theoretically (ab initio, molecular dynamics and
continuum models) investigate the mechanisms of diamond growth on various substrates; (3)
Theoretically investigate the appropriate laser parameters for producing desired radical species
and conditions that facilitate the growth of diamond by photo-dissociation of precursor gases.
