Gas Station Clean-Up Design Opportunity:
Narrative:
Gas stations have been part of American cities since the 1940’s. One station in Denver has operated for 50
years and is now being renovated to make an electric vehicle charging station. During the demolition the
engineers found that one of the gas tanks leaked for a long time and let a large amount of Gasoline seep
into the soil and water under it. The site has a lot of metal contamination that is nontoxic, but will limit
most organisms. The site is in city limits so they want it cleaned up fast with organisms that are not
pathogenic.
Design Considerations and Environment:
 The large amount of gasoline in shallow soils and ground water
 Site has metal contaminants and a lot of oxygen
 Rapid treatment is critical so mobile and/or rapid reproduction is essential
 The site is close to homes and people
