BY Courtney Barber ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM STATIC ELECTRICITY Static electricity is when a charge builds up on a material. EX: Has your hair ever stood on end while combing it? Well that is static electricity at work. INSULATORS A material that resists the flow of electricity or heat. EX- dry wood rubber plastic glass CONDUCTORS Material that can carry electricity or heat. EX- metal silver gold aluminum water copper humans CIRCUITS The pathway that electric current follows is called an electric circuit . To make an electric circuit you need: wire battery light bulb SIMPLE CIRCUIT Using two or three wires, one battery, and one light bulb. PARRALLEL CIRCUIT A closed electrical circuit in which the current is divided into two or more paths and then returns by a common path to complete the circuit. SERIES CIRCUIT An electric circuit connected so that current passes through each circuit element in turn without branching. BAR MAGNET Attracts- iron, steel, nickel, cobalt Has North and South poles Unlike poles attract Like poles repel Strongest at poles Made of magnetite ELECTROMAGNET Attracts iron, steel, nickel, cobalt Has no poles Has different strengths Temporary Made of wire, battery, iron HOW THEY ARE THEY ALIKE They attract the same objects. They are surrounded by magnetic fields. They are both metal based. HOW THEY ARE DIFFERENT An electromagnet can be controlled. A bar magnet has north and south poles. A bar magnet is permanent. An electromagnet is temporary. BAR MAGNETS AND ELECTROMAGNET
