Study Guide: Energy
Words to know:
Kinetic and Potential Energy
Law of Conservation of Energy
Forms of Energy: SCREAM
(Sound, Chemical, Radiant, Electrical, Atomic, Mechanical)
Gravitational and Elastic Potential Energy
Energy Transformations
Practice: Categorize as potential or kinetic:
1. A rock sitting at the edge of a cliff.
2. An insect flying
3. Tree branches high up in a tree.
4. A stick of dynamite
5. The food we eat has chemical potential energy because as our body
digests it, it provides us with energy for basic metabolism.
6. A car traveling down the road
7. A river flowing at a certain speed
8. A stretched spring in a pinball machine
9. When a crane swings a wrecking ball up
10.
A set of double "A" batteries in a remote control
11.
An airplane flying
12.
A baseball thrown by a pitcher
13.
A golf ball sitting on a tee before it is struck.
14.
An asteroid falling to earth at incredible speeds
15.
A downhill skier traveling down a hill
Energy Transformation: Determine how each item gets its energy and
transforms it to another form of energy (or energies). Use SCREAM as the
choices for each.
Concepts to understand:
1) What is kinetic and potential energy? Give examples of each.
2) What different forms does energy come in? What are other words to remember
these? Give examples of each?
3) How does energy change or transform from one type into another? Why? Give
examples. Where does energy go when it’s no longer being used?
