Marine Motorman Grade 2, 1 and Higher Grade Target Group Grade 2: A greaser with 18 months sea time and must have successfully completed a verbal examination. Grade 1: A marine motorman Grade 2 with 12 months sea time and must have successfully completed a verbal examination. Higher Grade: A marine motorman Grade 1 with 12 months sea time and must have successfully completed a verbal and written examination. Objectives To be able to fully understand the requirements needed to operate and maintain machinery in an engine room, steering flat and on deck. To have a basic and safe working knowledge of electrical equipment Introduction This learning opportunity is designed for Engineer Officers and Ratings employed during sea-going and/or alongside operations; onboard a fishing vessels. Outline Prepare main engine and auxiliary machinery for sea and test steering gear. Recording of engine room log book and the significance of readings taken. Routine pumping operations of fuel oil, fresh and salt water, bilge system and locating common faults. Preparing, starting, coupling and changing over alternators and/or generators. Safety precautions to be observed during a watch and the immediate actions to be taken in the event of a fire or accident, including electric shock on board. Transmitting information relating to machinery components by means of simple drawing with supplementary notes and specifications. Construction, safe operation and maintenance of machinery in the engine room, steering flat and on deck, including electrical knowledge. Basic hydraulic systems and the maintenance thereof. ABET Literacy and Be medically fit for sea Prerequisites Duration Grade 2: Grade 1: Higher Grade: 20 days 30 days 90 days Completion Exit level: The competent learner will be able to perform the duties as a marine motorman grade 2,1 or HG onboard a vessel both at sea and alongside Internationally.
