Humification processes of organic wastes, such as wood tips and papers, can be controlled by biochemical reactions (e.g., catalysts, enzymes, metal oxides and so on). In this class, topics for the chemistry of HSs and humification processes are explained and discussed. 到達目標 Course Goals In my class, I would like you to understand (i) basic concept, (ii) physico-chemical characteristics, (iii) methods for chemical analyses, and (iv) environmental and industrial importance of HSs. 授業計画 Course Schedule I. Concept History of humic substances research; Definition; Distributions II. Extraction and fractionation IHSS method; Humic acid; Fulvic acid; Humin (IHSS = International Humic Substances Society) III. Genesis Structural model; Humification processes; Degree of humification; Uv-vis spectrophotometry; Condensation reactions; Polymerization of phenols IV. Structural characterization Elemental composition; Functional group analyses; Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy; Molecular weight (HPLC); Pyrolysis-gas chromatography; Infrared spectrometry; Principals of instrumental analyses V. Electrochemical properties Surface charge density; Electrostatic model; Metal adsorption; Redox potentials; Redox reactions; Photo-induced electron transfer reactions VI. Environmental and industrial significance Mobilization and immobilization of elements; Detoxification of pollutants; Importance in plant growth; Production of agrochemicals; Importance as pharmaceuticals 準備学習(予習・復習)等の内容と分量 Homework The final problems in each class should be solved. 成績評価の基準と方法 Grading System Attendance: 15%, Presentation: 25%, Report about the problems: 60% (Full 100%). Note that attendance (at least 2/3 of all) is required. テキスト・教科書 Textbooks 講義指定図書 Reading List “Humic Substances in Soil and the Environment”/Tan, K.
