Course Description:
CROP 319 provides students with an understanding of the basic principles of field crop
production. The course covers the critical management practices required for field crop
production in the United States to assist students in preparing for a career in agriculture
or the agricultural sciences.
Prerequisites (recommended): CROP 300 or equivalent; SOIL 205
Expected Student Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of the course, students should be able to:
 Demonstrate a basic understanding of plant structures and their functions
 Describe photosynthesis
 Demonstrate the ability to read a soil test report and make a scientifically sound
fertilizer recommendation
 Identify the growth stages of the 3 major field crops in the United States
 Describe the critical management practices for production of the 3 major field
crops in the United States
 Identify and utilize the appropriate resources required to make critical decisions in
field crop production

Assessment/Evaluation of Student Performance:
Your grade will be based on a combination of a midterm examine (30%), a written
assignment (30%), pop quizzes (10%), and a final examine (30%). The standard
university grading scale will be used.
