SULLIVAN UNIVERSITY Graduate School Course Syllabus CSC 550: Data Mining Course Description: This course introduces the basic ideas and techniques of data mining. Data mining is an emerging interdisciplinary science, aimed at developing automatic or semiautomatic techniques to discover knowledge hidden within large databases. The main purpose of data mining is to provide decision makers with information that will enable them to make sound decisions. This course will help the student understand data and issues that need to be considered and the steps that need to be taken to successfully complete a data analysis or data mining project. This includes summarizing and interpreting data, differentiating between nontrivial and trivial data facts, patterns and relationships in the data, and making predictions from the data. Course Prerequisite: MGT 510 or concurrent Required Text(s) and Resources: Data Mining for Business Intelligence Course Outcomes: Understand the basic concepts with data mining and how they differ from online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP). Understand the overall data mining process including data cleaning, data visualization, classification, prediction, data reduction, data exploration and data modeling techniques. Understand the difference between supervised versus unsupervised method approaches and conditions under which each should be used. Understand the differences between classification versus predictive approaches, and methods of evaluating their performance. Be able to use XLMiner to implement data mining applications to identify non-trivial patterns and relationships that may exist in a data set. All students who withdraw or are withdrawn from the University are required to complete a Financial Aid Exit Interview with the Financial Planning Department. As of the winter, 2013 term, attendance will be recorded for each class meeting and absences that exceed the standards of this policy will result in students being administratively dropped from the course(s) affected. Attendance is taken and instructors are directed to report student attendance through the University’s student records management system. Students should be aware that credit hours associated with a course require a significant amount of work outside formal instruction. This academic “extra” is designed to provide more individualized help for students who are behind in their studies, miss class during the week, or just want to get ahead for the next week. These general dress standards will be enforced by the University faculty, staff and administration. Professional Dress Wednesday: On Wednesdays, day students are to dress as if they were going on a job interview. Students who are not appropriately and professionally dressed will not be permitted to attend class. This particular dress requirement is not applicable to evening students.
