Prior knowledge: Polygons, properties of triangles. 1) Mathematics - Geometry 2) Classifying Quadrilaterals Time: 20 mins Grade: 6 Strand: Geometry and Spatial Sense Key Concept/Big Idea: Students are able to identify various types of quadrilaterals and understand what the differences are between them Overall expectation: classify and construct polygons and angles. Specific expectation: Geometric Properties - sort and classify quadrilaterals by geometric properties related to symmetry, angles, and sides, through investigation using a variety of tools (e.g., geoboard, dynamic geometry software) and strategies (e.g., using charts, using Venn diagrams);. 1) Students will identify the specific properties of quadrilaterals and their sub-types. Materials: Cut-out shapes that include a mix of quadrilaterals and non-quadrilaterals (optional: You may add some 3-D shapes in order to emphasise the importance of the 2-D properties of quadrilateral) Chart with description of quadrilaterals families Chart with description of quadrilateral properties. Geo boards & elastics Paper 2 fly swatters Cut-out shapes of quadrilaterals, Tape Video of quadrilateral song. Instructional Groupings: students will work as whole class, individually and in pairs. Getting Started: Pre-assessment o Students are asked to give a definition of a polygon. 3 or more straight sides 2 dimensional shapes o Teachers confirm prior learning by eliciting properties of a triangle from the class. Introduce new concepts: Quadrilaterals o Teacher asks students what they think quadrilateral means. If necessary, reminds students that a triangle (tri) has three sides, what do they think a quadrilateral (quad) has? o Teacher goes over general properties of a quadrilateral. 4 sides 4 angles 4 angles total 360 degrees. Assessment o In the middle of the table are many various polygons and non-polygons. Students must find as many quadrilaterals as possible o Ask students why certain shapes weren’t chosen from the pile Sphere, hexagon, triangle, other non-polygons. o Re-affirm what properties a quadrilateral must have. Working on it: Introduction to the most common quadrilaterals and what their properties are o Square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid, kite. o Use of quadrilateral family chart to show similarities and differences between various quadrilaterals. 2 pairs of parallel sides (square, rhombus, parallelogram, rectangle) No parallel sides (kite) 1 pair of parallel sides (trapezoid) Equal opposite angles (square, trapezoid, rectangle, etc) Geoboards o Distribute geoboards to students. o Give students an opportunity to play with them for a minute. o Ask students to create a shape with all equal sides and angles. o Ask students to create a shape that 1 set of parallel sides and 2 sets of equal angles (trapezoid). o Have students make a quadrilateral that is composed of two different sized triangles back-to-back (kite). Student assessment o The teacher gives the students directions on how to build a robot, using various quadrilaterals as different body parts. o The students must listen to the teacher’s directions and draw what they are told. Your robot has a kite head. Your robot has a square body. 2 Your robot has parallelogram legs. Your robot has rectangular arms. Your robot has square feet. Your robot has trapezoid hands. o Assessment is confirmed through completion of the activity. Reflecting and Connecting: Fly swatter game o The teacher pastes various quadrilaterals on the wall in order to play the fly swatter game. o Two students compete against each other by swatting the shape the teacher calls out. o The student that wins gets to play again. o Students take turns until at least everyone gets to go once. Conclude lesson by asking students what they learned throughout the class, and by watching the Quadrilateral Song video on youtube. Home Connection: Students are asked to bring their pictures home to show their parents. They should get the back of the picture signed. 3 4
