Psychology Department Learning Outcomes (DLO)
1.
Apply the various psychological theories and concepts, including personality theory,
consciousness, learning theory, and others, to our own personal and professional lives.
2.
Develop a tolerance, acceptance, and appreciation of the diversity of others thoughts,
backgrounds, and self-concepts.
3. Understand various topics and concepts within psychology, and integrate these into a whole
concept of individuals and groups.
4. Apply the learning outcome goals provided by the American Psychological Association
(http://www.apa.org/ed/pcue/taskforcereport2.pdf) These include:
Goal 1. Knowledge Base of Psychology
Students will demonstrate familiarity with the major concepts, theoretical perspectives,
empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology.
Goal 2. Research Methods in Psychology
Students will understand and apply basic research methods in psychology, including
research design, data analysis, and interpretation.
Goal 3. Critical Thinking Skills in Psychology
Students will respect and use critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and, when
possible, the scientific approach to solve problems related to behavior and mental
processes.
Goal 4. Application of Psychology
Students will understand and apply psychological principles to personal, social, and
organizational issues.
Goal 5. Values in Psychology
Students will be able to weigh evidence, tolerate ambiguity, act ethically, and reflect
other values that are the underpinnings of psychology as a discipline.
Goal 6. Information and Technological Literacy
Students will demonstrate information competence and the ability to use computers and
other technology for many purposes.

Students will be able to communicate effectively in a variety of formats.

Students will recognize, understand, and respect the complexity of sociocultural and
international diversity.
Goal 9. Personal Development
Students will develop insight into their own and others’ behavior and mental processes
and apply effective strategies for self-management and self-improvement.
Goal 10. Career Planning and Development
Students will emerge from the major with realistic ideas about how to implement their
psychological knowledge, skills, and values in occupational pursuits in a variety of
settings.
Psychology 101 Introduction to Psychology
1.
Describe and analyze the logical assumptions guiding the scientific
study of both mind and brain processes.
2.
Compare and contrast the central theories that are currently adopted to describe, explain,
predict, change/control mental processes and behavior.
3.
Examine and describe the core components of contemporary social learning, cognitive,
psychodynamic, psychobiological and socio-cultural theories.
Psychology 102 Personal Growth
1.
Explain different psychological approaches as offering useful guidelines for growth and
adjustment.
2.
Express orally, and in written form, a synthesis of the concepts of human needs,
emotional health, and the influence of personality development in personal growth.
3.
Apply communication and interpersonal skills discussed in class to social situations.
Psychology 103 Human Development
1.
Apply the major theories of child development, particularly the psychoanalytic, learning,
and cognitive.
2.
Synthesize the most important stages of child development, and understand the relevance
of maturation and individual differences to development.
3.
Apply and examine Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development and understand its
implications for education and parenting.
Psychology 104 Psychology of Gender
1.
Compare and contrast the different psychological perspectives and explain how
theoretical principles relate to a variety of gender issues.
2.
Summarize, critique and apply psychological theories that are prevalent in explaining
gender differences.
3.
Describe and analyze the impact that gender is having in their personal, social and
intellectual development.
Psychology 105 Social Psychology
1.
To provide and critique factors that contribute to interpersonal relationships, including
proximity; physical attraction, and communication.
2.
To differentiate psychological and sociological concepts of aggression and the
application of this understanding to reduce aggressive social interactions.
3.
To differentiate and analyze the power of prejudice, stereotypes and discrimination and
our ability to reduce the effects of these concepts, both personally and socially.

Critique the various ways in which personality is learned, utilizing the various learning
theories.

Compare and contrast the various external and internal factors influencing human
motivation.
3.
Examine the formation and development of personality in childhood and throughout life,
and synthesize the various personality theories as they relate to childhood and the lifespan.

Categorize the symptoms and phases that characterize schizophrenia.
