The Circulatory System By Ali Richter By Ali Richter Science Mrs. Hunt 22nd nd period period What is the main function? • The main function of the circulatory system is to transport vital materials throughout the body. • Other functions include transporting blood and oxygen from the lungs to various tissues of the body, delivering nutrients to the cells, moving waste to organs that can get rid of it, maintaining body temperature, and fighting off infections. What are the main organs? • The main organs of the circulatory system are the heart, blood, and blood vessels. The heart pumps the blood through the blood vessels. The Heart • The heart is around the size of a clenched fist. It has four chambers; the right ventricle, the right atrium, the left ventricle, and the left atrium. Its job is to pump oxygen rich to all living cells in the body. The Blood Vessels • The blood vessels are basically the arteries, veins, and capillaries. The veins carry deoxygenated blood to the heart, they are blue. The arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart and to the cells of the body. The capillaries connect the arteries and veins. They allow nutrients, gases, and waste to move throughout the body. The Blood • The blood consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen and carbon dioxide. The white blood cells help the body fight off germs. Platelets form plugs (scabs) that stop us from bleeding to death. What other systems does it work with? • The circulatory system works with all of the body systems. It works with the muscular system by supplying blood and oxygen to the muscles, which helps them function properly. It works with the skeletal system since the red blood cells are made inside the bones. The respiratory system supplies the blood (in the circulatory system) with oxygen and in turn gets rid of carbon dioxide when you exhale. The endocrine system secretes hormones into the circulatory system. The digestive system breaks down the nutrients that are absorbed into the bloodstream and transported all over the body. The kidneys, which are in the excretory system, rid the blood of waste. The skin, which is part of the integumentary system, is filled with many blood vessels. The circulatory system gives nutrients to the nervous system, and also takes the waste. The nervous system controls little things in the circulatory system, like heart rate.
