The Digestive System Mouth Oesophagus Large Intestine Rectum Stomach Small Intestine Mouth The digestive system starts with the mouth where you chew food into little pieces. There the saliva has enzymes that helps to crush the food up. Oesophagus The oesophagus ( a stretchy pipe also known as the gullet) is used to carry food from the mouth to the stomach. Stomach The stomach breaks the food down with gastric acid. Also, it kills the germs and eats the bacteria. The food eventually travels to the small intestine. Small Intestine The small intestine is the shape of a long slide and is 6 meters long. Most of the digestion is done in the small intestine. Large Intestine When the food enters the large intestine it absorbs water into the body. The waste is made into faeces which are excreted through the rectum and anus. It forms and stores faeces. Rectum The rectum stores the waste until it leaves the body through the anus. The rectum leads to the anus. Did you know? .
