ESSENTIAL UNIT 2 (E02)
(Exhibiting Leadership Qualities)
(July 2012)
Unit Statement: This unit provides opportunity for student think before singing; sing and
make it sound as if he/she really means what he/she is singing. The student will perform
assignments with different ability ranges, voice groupings, and instrumental components.
The student will take leadership roles in selecting, rehearsing, and critiquing ensemble
literature. Discussion and coach help in addressing common problems, in providing
additional instruction, and in developing critical techniques. The student will demonstrate
proficiency in musical comprehension.
Essential Outcomes:
1. The Student Will find the main musical idea (heart of the music) and performs it
musically.
2. TSW work on the musical interpretation of the melody, making it clearly audible.
3. TSW work on entries, making them musical and precise. Entry is a team effort.
4. TSW focus on a clean cut-off on the rest, work on clear consonants.
5. TSW breathe at the breath marks. If the breathing places are not obvious, mark all
breaths with commas in the suitable places.
6. TSW practice sudden and gradual dynamics changes (cresc. and dim.), but at the
same time keep the tempo steady: “soft” does not mean “slow”, and “loud”
does not mean “fast”.
7. TSW practice gradual tempo changes within a musical piece (ritardando,
accelerando, rubato).
8. TSW sight-sing musical materials, embracing vertical line and horizontal part.
Make a habit of moving eyes quickly down to the needed part in the next
group of staves.
Suggested Materials:
Successful Sight Singing book 1 and book 2, Teacher’s and vocal editions.
Successful Performing book 1 and book 2, Conductor’s and singer’s editions.

TSW#2 Contour
The student analyzes and
distinguishes between smoothlooking melody, that performed
controlled, calmly, and sorrowful and
jagged melody, performed perky,
excited, or dramatic. A rising melody
is uplifting or suspenseful, but
descending melody is sorrowful or
thoughtful. Student is able to perform
it properly simply looking at the
melody.
The student analyzes and
distinguishes between
varieties of melody
contours and has minor
inaccuracy performing
them.
Types of
rhythm
Presence of long notes in the melody
makes it more expressive, but
quantity of short notes indicates a
more action-oriented spirit. Student is
able to read rhythm varieties and
perform them properly.
Student is able to read the
rhythm of the melody,
performs long and short
notes on correct time with
one-two stops
Length
Short melody is usually quite simple,
but long melodies may be repetitive
or may express more complicated
emotions or ideas. Student is able to
perform it properly simply looking at
the length of the melody.
The student is able to
analyze and distinguish
between varieties of
melody length and
performs them most of
time correctly.
The student inhales several beats
before the entry, imagining the first
pitch in the mind, breathes in the
pitch and sings pitch perfectly in time
and in tune.
Student demonstrates
preparation before the
entries and performs them
mostly in time and in tune.

The student watches for the rest and
is ready for a clean cut-off: if the last
word in a phrase ends with a
consonant, the final consonant is
placed at the beginning of the rest; if
the last word ends with a vowel, the
vowel is ended at the beginning of
the rest. All cut offs are performed
correctly with clear diction.
Student performs cut offs
with clear diction and on
the rests most of the time.

Student is able to recognize breath marks
and perform them properly with
supporting the free tone to the best of
his/her ability. If there is no breath
marks, student uses rests or
independently put commas in the
suitable places.
Student is able to derecognize
breath marks and usually
breathes properly. Student is
able to work independently
only in obvious places.

For the crescendo student pushing a
lever forward. For the gradual change
in dynamics, student slowly changes
the air pressure with tummy muscles.
The air pressure is increased for
crescendo. Dynamic is balanced at all
times. Student listens carefully to fit
the entire musical piece.

Student naturally performs
ritardando, accelerando, and rubato: it
appropriate for most Romantic
pieces, but not for Baroque or
Classical works. Student tries to
create the true spirit of the music and
fit the entire musical piece.
Student distinguishes
ritardando, accelerando,
and rubato, performs them
sometimes with not time
balance.
TSW#8
Student demonstrates ability,
independence and confidence when
sight-singing the musical work.
Student has a habit to move eyes
