VOCAL MUSIC II (SECONDARY) ESSENTIAL UNIT 2 (E02) (Exhibiting Leadership Qualities) (July 2012) Unit Statement: This unit provides opportunity for student think before singing; sing and make it sound as if he/she really means what he/she is singing. The student will perform assignments with different ability ranges, voice groupings, and instrumental components. The student will take leadership roles in selecting, rehearsing, and critiquing ensemble literature. Discussion and coach help in addressing common problems, in providing additional instruction, and in developing critical techniques. The student will demonstrate proficiency in musical comprehension. Essential Outcomes: 1. The Student Will find the main musical idea (heart of the music) and performs it musically. 2. TSW work on the musical interpretation of the melody, making it clearly audible. 3. TSW work on entries, making them musical and precise. Entry is a team effort. 4. TSW focus on a clean cut-off on the rest, work on clear consonants. 5. TSW breathe at the breath marks. If the breathing places are not obvious, mark all breaths with commas in the suitable places. 6. TSW practice sudden and gradual dynamics changes (cresc. and dim.), but at the same time keep the tempo steady: “soft” does not mean “slow”, and “loud” does not mean “fast”. 7. TSW practice gradual tempo changes within a musical piece (ritardando, accelerando, rubato). 8. TSW sight-sing musical materials, embracing vertical line and horizontal part. Make a habit of moving eyes quickly down to the needed part in the next group of staves. Suggested Materials: Successful Sight Singing book 1 and book 2, Teacher’s and vocal editions.
