VOCAL MUSIC I (SECONDARY) SELECTIVE UNIT 4 (S04) (Music Covering the 19th Century) (July 2012) Unit Statement: This unit provides opportunities for student to respond, sing, and analyze works of musical art. This will include the study of Romantic period. The student will study the historical and cultural contexts of their listening and performance selections, learn the origins of traditional materials, their time frames and composers, and listen to exemplary models. Essential Outcomes: 1. The Student Will recognize the Romantic music in relation to history and culture. 2. TSW identify main features of Romantic style and recognize them by listening. 3. TSW listen to, define and practice style, form, harmonies of romantic music, focusing on vocal technique. 4. TSW recognize main figures of the Romantic time and their musical works (Franz Shubert and Robert Shuman with their program song-circles, genre such as romance, Giuseppe Verdi with his operas “La Traviata” and “Rigoletto”, George Bizet with his opera “Carmen” and Richard Wagner with his reformation and leitmotif) 5. TSW listen, describe, discuss, and recognize, by listening to, musical works of one of the composers of Romantic period. 6.
