EVSU campaigns for breast cancer prevention
Eastern Visayas State University joined this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, advocating for early
detection, treatment and prevention of breast cancer.
Through the partnership of the Rotaract of Kandaya – EVSU Chapter and the Gender and
Development Office, EVSU put up a seminar forum held last October 19 at the new ORDEx Building
anchored on the theme: “Early Detection Is Your Best Protection”.
"Don’t use fear as an excuse that's why you will not consult a doctor. Fear will do you no good if
you have a cancer. Always be strong and don’t miss an opportunity to detect it early because early
detection is your protection," said Mrs. Margie Varberg, an American stage two-B breast cancer survivor.
Some 100 participants composed of students, teaching and non-teaching personnel, barangay
officials and representatives from Brgy. 43-A Quarry District and Brgy. 92 Apitong of Tacloban took part
of the said symposium.
"You're just a cancer. I am stronger, more intelligent and I have my family and God who takes care
of me," Dr. Fatima Socorro Quianzon, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and stage two breast
cancer survivor.
Mrs. Joy Badeo, a Finance Officer at EVSU-Burauen and a stage-three breast cancer survivor on
the other hand stressed on how important early detection is in her battle against breast cancer.
"I learned three things: First, trust in God. Whatever happens He will always be there. Two, family.
I can really tell it can really move mountains because whatever problems that come along the way they
will always be at your side. Third, early detection is important because it is your best protection," Mrs.
Badeo emphasized.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Liza Calda, adviser of the Rotaract of Kandaya - EVSU Chapter presented the
proper technique to do Breast Self-Examination (BSE), a practical way of examining lumps in a woman’s
breast. She also shared her experiences while battling the same cancer.
"If you have observed abnormalities on your breast, immediately consult a doctor to prevent and
avoid breast cancer," Mrs. Calda said.
In connection with the month-long celebration of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the
Rotaract of Kandaya - EVSU Chapter opened their Breast Cancer Awareness Exhibit at the Administration
Building last October 10. They likewise linked with other organizations like the Rotaract of Kandaya –
Tacloban in proffering a run for a cause dubbed “Pink Run” last October 30.
