General [World] History
Monday, 1/5/15

Students will view a timeline of ancient Greece which will include information about Socrates, Plato, and
Aristotle.
Notes and discussion: 1. Who fought the Greeks at the battle of Marathon and what helped the
Athenians win? 2. Who was the Athenian leader during the Golden Age of Athens and what did he
accomplish? 3. Who fought during the Peloponnesian War and how long did it last? 4. Who were some
of the great Greek thinkers? 5. What are some examples of Greek words and ideas used in our own
language?
Students will read and answer critical thinking questions about Athenian freedom and democracy
[Exercises 49]. Also, students will develop their map skills by using a map of ancient Greece to answer
questions. For example, one question will ask students to find the location of Mt. Olympus in relation to
Athens [Exercise 50]. Students will read paragraphs about three Greek mathematicians and use this
information to complete a chart identifying their major discoveries and achievements [Exercise 51].
Wednesday, 1/7/15
As a class we will review for the Chapter 7 Test, “Greek City-States and the Golden Age” by making a
study guide in class.
Also, we will review for the Chapter 7 Test by completing the chapter 7 review found on pages 98-99 of
the textbook. This will include a vocabulary review, a chapter quiz, and the use of a timeline.
The class will be divided into two teams and we will play a review game using key words and ideas from
the chapter test.
Friday, 1/9/15
Chapter 7 Test, “Greek City-States and the Golden Age”
Students will copy the words to know for Chapter 8, “Alexander the Great”, found on page 101.
Guided reading will begin for the new chapter if time permits.
Students will begin viewing a PowerPoint presentation on Alexander the Great.
Tuesday, 1/13/15

Students will watch a video clip describing an Alexander the Great mosaic from Pompeii.
Notes and discussion: 1.What did King Philip II do for the people of Macedonia? 2. How did Philip
become ruler of Greece? 3. What did Alexander the Great learn from his father, his mother, and
Aristotle? 4. What Persian king did Alexander battle with and what was the result of these battles?
Students will complete the words to know activity by matching words with their meanings and
determining whether statements about Alexander the Great are correct [Exercise 56]. Also, students
will determine the correct description of key figures in Alexander’s life along with answering other
questions concerning Alexander’s life [Exercise 57].
Students will complete the reading study guide, “Alexander-Empire Builder”, Chapter 5, section 4, where
students will read about Macedonia and how Alexander defeated Persia.
Thursday, 1/15/15

Students will view a map of Alexander’s Empire, 323 BCE.
Notes and discussion: 1.What did Alexander do in Egypt? 2. What did Alexander’s army do to the city of
Persepolis in southwestern Persia? 3. What did Alexander do in India? 4. How old was Alexander at the
time of his death and what happened to his empire after he died?
Students will complete a critical thinking activity learn about the seven ancient wonders of the world
[Exercise 58]. Also, students will use a timeline to put events in Alexander the Great’s life in the correct
order [Exercise 59].
Students will complete the reading study guide, “The Spread of Hellenistic Culture”, Chapter 5, section 5,
where students will read about Hellenistic culture including achievements in science, technology,
mathematics, philosophy, and the arts.
