Transcript
As a class, we will build a Greek Mythology Bulletin Board. It will include a
depiction of the Olympian Gods and Goddesses (including Hades and Poseidon in
their realms), plus an illustrated map of Greece and a large, illustrated family tree
of the Olympians. This will be meant for PUBLIC viewing.
Task A. Greek Pantheon+
Some students will be assigned deities or heroes, be given pictures of them, and
required to do the following:
Add appropriate color to the picture with colored pencils or markers.
Create a speech bubble with the deity saying something, addressing some other character in
Greek mythology, in a way that conveys meaningful information about the story of the deity and
consistent with his/her character. This should be about 50-75 words long.
Create a thought bubble with something the deity might be thinking about but perhaps not say
publicly. This should be about 20-30 words long. It should be well-thought-out, connected to
the “facts” of Greek myth, and may be humorous!
Use an appropriate font, and try to size the bubble so it isn’t gigantic compared to the picture.
What a raw deal. You
watch, they’ll finally realize
what they’ve got and make
me a god— after I’m DEAD,
for crying out loud!
Look, Oracle, you know that jerk Zeus
made me go crazy and kill my wife and
kids! Now you’re telling me I have to do all
this stupid stuff, like kill some Nemean
Lion and the Hydra to boot. Look, if I
gotta catch that Cerynean Hind thingy,
can’t I at least eat it instead of taking it
to Tiryns? Artemis’ll never know. I
promise!
You must do research to form a basis for what you write. Your
sources are to be listed on the back of the map, in MLA or APA
Works Consulted/Bibliography format. Your writing must
sophisticated and completely error-free, showing that you take
pride your work.
Task B. Maps of the Ancient World
Some students will be assigned to draw a large, colorful, illustrated map of ancient Greece and other
Mediterranean lands, including the islands.
This should be at least 18 x 18 inches and very detailed, with all important city-states, oracles, temples,
etc. labeled. It should have important places enlarged and illustrated more fully. You may use a key to
label places, as on the first two examples below:
These two maps really are of the Ancient World
Your map must be fully researched, from several sources. These sources are to be listed
on the back of the map, in MLA or APA Works Consulted/Bibliography format.
The illustrations should be careful and sophisticated. It may, however be taken from online sources (again, cited on the back) if you are not competent at free-hand drawing.
Task C. Family Trees
Some students will be assigned to create large, illustrated family trees of various
branches of mythological families.
Your family trees must be fully researched, from several sources. These sources are to be listed on
the backs of the trees, in MLA or APA Works Consulted/Bibliography format. The illustrations
should be careful and sophisticated. They may, however be taken from on-line sources (again, cited
on the back) if you are not competent at free-hand drawing.
Examples of possible formats:
Your tree must at least 18x18 inches and be fully researched from several sources.
These sources are to be listed on the back of the map, in MLA or APA Works
Consulted/Bibliography format. The illustration should be careful and sophisticated.
It may, however, be taken from on-line sources (again, cited on the back) if you are not
competent at free-hand drawing.
