Emerging infectious diseases increasingly are recognized
as global and regional issues. Some infectious diseases are
controlled effectively with the help of modern technology. But
new diseases—such as SARS, West Nile, and avian influenza
virus infections—appear frequently, and older ones, including
malaria, tuberculosis, and bacterial pneumonia, are now
appearing in forms that are resistant to drug treatments. All of
them have the potential to seriously affect human and animal
health as well as economies locally and worldwide. They pose
novel and unceasing challenges for professionals in health
care, government, and private agencies.
The Certificate in Emerging Infectious Disease Epidemiology
is administered by the Department of Epidemiology. The
Graduate College grants the certificate.
