St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center
St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital
The flagship of the system is St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in
Paterson, NJ. An academic tertiary care medical center which includes
state designated St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, is where 200,000 of
the system’s 325,000 total imaging exams are performed annually.
Imaging Subspecialists of North Jersey, a 20-member radiology
group, provides professional services at the regional medical center and three other imaging locations throughout the system. This
group is led by Frank Yuppa, MD, RVT, Chairman of Radiology at
St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Ambulatory
Imaging Center at Clifton, and President of Imaging Subspecialists
of North Jersey, LLC. With over 30 years of experience and multiple
board certifications, Dr. Yuppa hand selected board-certified, fellowship trained, subspecialty radiologists who have trained at leading
medical centers across the country. This impressive team of radiologists, three of whom are Level III certified in Cardiac CT, is one of the
state’s largest and most comprehensive practices.
Many of these physicians are subspecialized and hold certifications
in areas such as Neuroradiology, Musculoskeletal Radiology (including interventional injections and aspirations), Pediatric Radiology,
Women’s Imaging, Cardiovascular Radiology, Body-imaging, Level III
certified in Cardiac CT, Interventional Radiology, RPVI (Registered
Physician Vascular Interpreter), and Nuclear Medicine.
The St. Joseph’s Radiology Department prides itself on its commitment to quality and continual performance improvement. Staff
is apprised of performance data on processes such as stroke code
CT turnaround time, the patient fall-risk assessment process, and
the department’s patient satisfaction scores.
“We understand our role in the patient’s health care management,”
says John Hart, Administrative Director of Radiology for St. Joseph’s.
“Our product – performing an imaging exam, rendering a professional interpretation, producing a signed report and ensuring that report
gets into the hands of the ordering physician – needs to be timely and
of top quality so that the patient’s care can move forward. We monitor
performance in all areas and track our patients’ satisfaction with our
service. Our customers, patients and physicians, depend upon and
deserve a high quality product.”
A division of St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph’s
Wayne Hospital is an acute care community hospital located in
Wayne, NJ. The Radiology Department at St. Joseph’s Wayne
Hospital is overseen by a four-member radiology group led by
Michael Steinberg, MD. This physician group provides a wide
range of expertise: two physicians have fellowship training in
vascular and interventional radiology, one physician sub-specializes in neuro-radiology, and one is fellowship trained in CT,
MRI, and ultrasound.
Imaging services at St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital support the
Emergency Department and inpatients. Outpatient imaging is
provided by University Imaging, located in a building adjacent to
the hospital.
St. Joseph’s staff, across the Healthcare System, are fully committed to high quality care and patient satisfaction as part of
the organization’s “Embracing Excellence” campaign. Maria
Lachapel, Operations Manager in Radiology, serves on the
Steering Committee for the Embracing Excellence initiative.
“What inpatients and emergency patients have in common is that
they are waiting for hospital staff to perform tests, get results,
and make decisions so that the patient can go home. As a result,
patients are keenly aware of how well hospital staff communicate
and work together on their behalf. Our Embracing Excellence
philosophy is designed to improve service to our patients, and
each other as well.”
Lachapel has worked specifically with inpatient units and the
Emergency Department to initiate projects designed to improve
interdepartmental cooperation and patient awareness. “We
have put inpatient imaging on a moderate schedule,” Lachapel
said. “When we receive exam orders from patient care units, we
let them know approximately when we will be calling for that
patient. This way, patients have a better idea of when they will
need to leave their room and can let potential visitors know this.
It also benefits the staff because they may have other exams or
treatments to coordinate for the patients and this advance information helps them in that regard.”

St. Joseph’s University Imaging
St. Joseph’s Ambulatory Imaging Center at Clifton
St. Joseph’s University Imaging is one of the most advanced diagnostic imaging centers in northern New Jersey. Grounded in a tradition
of excellence, the dedicated team of board-certified radiologists and
technologists have been serving the community for more than 20
years through their relationship with St. Joseph’s Healthcare System.
University Imaging’s compassionate care is universal. It starts
with the first phone call and first appointment. Patients appreciate
the warm and friendly reception upon their arrival. In addition to
general services, University Imaging specializes in diagnostics to
promote Women’s Health. The staff demonstrates St. Joseph’s one
system-one patient-one story culture of delivering excellence to
patients and their physicians.
The supportive staff of highly trained technologists provides
every patient with the most comfortable, positive experience possible. In 2013, University Imaging added a new value-added service
that provides the patient with their own Patient Care Coordinator
(PCC) who answers their many questions. Patients have direct
access to their PCC before, during and after their visit, and can
call, text, or email the PCC directly.
“Physicians entrust their patients to us because they know they
will receive excellent results in the shortest time and that their
patients will appreciate the extraordinary personal care, privacy and
convenience we offer,” said Charles Whang, MD, Medical Director,
University Imaging.
University Imaging is driven to stay on the leading edge of care. It is
fully accredited by the American College of Radiology in all modalities
and the group’s technological edge extends to workflow systems.
University Imaging’s PACS allows all St. Joseph’s Healthcare
System providers to quickly access radiology reports from a single
archive, while ensuring accuracy of a patient’s identification and
images. In addition, everything from insurance precertification to
transcription is done on location. This translates into faster review
of test results, same day results and treatments because the entire
care team – radiologists, specialists and referring physicians – have
total access and can view the same images at the same time, 24
hours-a-day.
St. Joseph’s Ambulatory Imaging Center at Clifton is a premier diagnostic imaging center in North Jersey offering leading
edge multi-modality imaging technology services. The center
maintains full accreditation from the American College of
Radiology in all imaging modalities, including accreditation
in Cardiac CT. The staff of St. Joseph’s Ambulatory Imaging
