The Digestive System The cells in your body need a constant supply of nutrients. These nutrients supply energy and the building blocks needed to manufacture body substances. The food we eat is not in the proper form. It must be broken down into small particles that are able to pass through the cells. The breakdown process is called digestion. After the breakdown, the circulatory system carries the food to the cells. The food enters that system through the process of absorption. In this unit, you will be studying these two chief functions of the digestive system along with the diseases of this system.
