A Brief Introduction to Institute of Urban Meteorology, CMA Sept. , 7 2004 Organization BMB CMA IUM ODP Branch FT Branch UEM UMD Branch Branch Office of the 2 Director Background • IUM was established in December 2001, and is one of 8 research institutes under CMA, within the Ministry of Science and Technology (MST) of the People’s Republic of China, each of them specialize in one specific field。 • IUM is the only research institution in China dedicated to Urban meteorology. 3 Background Goals • To conduct applied research associated with urban meteorology; • To conduct the thorough and innovatory study on urban meteorology with advanced observation , data processing and modelling techniques; • To promote urban meteorology research in China. 4 Focus Research Fields Observation & Data Processing Forecast Techniques IUM Urban Ecological Meteorology Urban Meteorological Disaster 5 Observation & Data Processing Branch • Objectives • to design some observing networks to meet the requirements for meteorological and climate data in the urban environment. • to develop new observing techniques in urban area; • to develop the data base techniques for massive observation data quality control, data collection, transmission,archiving, distribution ,etc. 6 Forecast Technique Branch Objectives To develop various advanced forecasting techniques adapted to urban weather service, including: • Specific and accurate weather forecasting technique in urban area( finer spatial scales); • Data analysis and assimilation technique in city area; • Post processing of mesoscale model output and verification technique; • Severe weather nowcasting technique. 7 Urban Ecological Met. Branch • Objectives • Relationship between urban development and climate change; • Interactions between the weather and ecological system in urban area and their impacts on the human activities and health ; • Air quality forecasting technique in urban area ; • Urban biological and medical meteorology; • Meteorological factors effects in the city planning. 8 Urban Met.
