Department of Engineering and Design PREPARATION FOR YEAR 3 Dr Helen Prance Head of Department This session covers: • The year 3 Individual Project Allocation Supervision Preparation Sources of further information Year 3 Projects – School Exhibition 2015 Year 3 Projects • Selection • Allocation • Supervision • Preparation • Location • Sources of further information Selection • Engineering project proposals published 13 April on display in Richmond foyer Also on web http://www.sussex.ac.uk/ei/internal/forstudents/engineeringdesign/ug/projects • May be late additional proposals • Product Design briefs to be presented on 27 April Engineering Selection Note • Deadline • Project identifier • Contact person signatures • Four choices • Hardware/software preference • Own project proposal http://www.sussex.ac.uk/ei/internal/forstudents/engineeringdesign/ug/projects Individual Project (H1043) Product Design Selection and allocation Note • Deadline tba • Project theme or brief • Allocation week 2 of Autumn term http://www.sussex.ac.uk/ei/internal/forstudents/engineeringdesign/ug/projects Design Project (H6052) Engineering Allocation • Done by project convenor after deadline • Choice forms submitted by the deadline dealt with first THEN late submissions • Aim to publish initial allocation by 10 June (if submitted by deadline) • Could be allocated ANY of four choices • Cannot promise first choice but WILL aim to give preference area and type of project • If not happy with allocation AFTER talking to contact person, see project convenor • Project supervisor may not necessarily be the contact person Allocation – Formula Student Class 2 projects • Will be a few for Electrical/Electronic/Computer Engineer • And for Mechanical/Automotive Engineers • Need one or two MEng to carry on into year 4 on Formula Student • Can put as first choice but MUST choose three others to be considered • Add to form (or email to HP) a short statement to support your request Supervision • First supervisors will be confirmed at start of next year (19 September 2016) First supervisor • acts as main point of contact and advice • monitors your progress and attendance • provides access to resources (ordering, specialist equipment, specialist software) and signs off main workshop requests (engineering drawings) • • marks interim report • joint marks final report • meet at least weekly, at mutually agreed times Second supervisors allocated by end of Autumn term • can provide additional, specialist advice • deputises in first supervisor’s absence • can deal with concerns over first supervision Preparation http://www.sussex.ac.uk/ei/internal/forstudents/engineeringdesign/ug/projects Individual Project (H1043) After allocation (Engineering) • meet or email the contact person • get more information about project and guidance on background reading Over vacation • start literature search/ Product Design project research • revise modules that relate directly to your project • start preparing project plan • See the Project Study Direct sites when they open • Buy a logbook!
