February 2016 MEMORANDUM To: From: Through: RE: All AP Teachers and Students Kayla Freeman, AP Coordinator Dr. Myriam Yarbrough, Principal AP Exams Taking the Advanced Placement exam is an important part of all AP courses. Paint Branch High School desires that all students take AP exams for the AP classes that they have taken. Many colleges and universities indicate that they often do not attach value to a course labeled AP unless an official AP Exam grade is also presented for that course. Scoring well on an AP exam can often earn students college credit for their high school class, saving a significant amount on tuition. The AP exam fee for 2016 is $92.00 per exam. For the 2016 AP exams, all students at Paint Branch High School will need to register online through the Total Registration website. This registration will take a few minutes and can be completed from any computer with internet access. AP exam payments should be made after registering either online through the Montgomery County Public School Online School Payment website (http://osp.osmsinc.com/montgomeryMD) or by check or money order (payable to PBHS). Checks and money orders should be turned in to Ms. Freeman in the math office (room 2328) before/after school or during LAP. Payments may not be made in cash. Online Exam registration will begin on Tue., Feb 16, 2016 at 7:30 AM and end on Wed., March 16, 2016 at 3:00 PM. In order to register, students should click on the link provided on the school website or visit www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/210316 to register for their exam(s). To complete registration, students must answer all of the required questions. Registration is not complete until students have printed the pdf of the confirmation page that is provided at the end. We know that parents may desire to register their students for exams. We strongly recommend that parents and students are both present while registering to ensure that the correct exams are ordered. Please note the following dates for the registration process: Tue., Feb. 16, 2016 at 7:30 AM - Registration Begins Wed., Mar. 16, 2016 at 3:00 PM - Registration Ends Fri. Mar. 18, 2016 at 3:00 PM - Registrations that have not been paid for will be cancelled and exams will not be ordered. Subsidizing Fees: While there are limited funds available to cover the cost of exams, there are three types of subsidies available to Paint Branch students. 1. Students eligible for a fee waiver (see fee waiver form): The College Board provides a $30.00 reduction and the school forgoes its rebate of $9.00, resulting in a cost of $53.00 per exam, which the State of Maryland may cover. At this time, due to state funding, the expected cost students will be responsible to pay is $12.00 per exam. However, if funding changes, students may be responsible for a greater portion of the cost (up to $53.00). Please see Ms. Freeman for a fee waiver form or to verify submission of form in January 2016. 2. Students who demonstrate a financial hardship: If you do not meet the federal poverty / fee waiver guidelines, but require assistance paying for exams, a parent/guardian should demonstrate financial hardship in writing to Ms. Freeman. 3. Multiple Exam Takers: Student’s taking multiple exams who are not eligible for financial assistance will receive a discount as follows: a. 1 exam - pay the full amount ($92.00); b. 2 exams - you will have a 25% reduction ( $23.00) on one exam (resulting in a cost of $69.00 for the 2nd exam); c. 3 or more exams - Paint Branch will pay 50% ($46.00) of the cost of one exam. (Resulting in two exams at $92.00 and one exam at $46.00) Refunds: Refund requests in the amount of $43.00 (per full price exam) must be made in writing by June 3, 2016, for any test not taken. Once you begin an exam – that is, write on an exam booklet or answer sheet – you cannot receive a refund. You are expected to report to the designated testing room on time. Late arrival will result in forfeiture of the test. The exact test location will be communicated to you in April during the pre-administration session. The following AP exams will be offered May 2016: Biology Calculus AB Calculus BC Chemistry English Language & Comp English Literature & Comp. Environmental Science French Language Physics I Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism Physics C: Mechanics Psychology Spanish Language Studio Art Statistics US Gov. & Pol. (NSL) US History World History Please Note: Students wishing to take exams that are scheduled for the same time slot should see the AP Coordinator, Ms. Freeman, to discuss late testing options. Under no circumstances may an examination be given before the scheduled starting time.
