Election of Andrew Jackson
• 1824: John Q. Adams was elected with Henry Clay’s
support.
• Democratic Republican Party was created by Jackson’s
supporters.
• Jackson’s Appeal in 1828
– Man of humble origin as opposed to Adams being
intellectual elite.
– Known as “old hickory”

Jackson’s Style
• Spoils System: Gave government jobs to his supporters
• Did not consult his formal cabinet.
– Had a “kitchen cabinet.”
• With him began Jacksonian Democracy that replaced
Jeffersonian Democracy
• He dominated both the congress and the Supreme Court
• Removed Native Americans east of Mississippi river to the
west.
– “Trail of Tears” of the Cherokee nation.

States’ Rights Issue
• Protective Tariff of 1816, increased twice by 1928,
angered the Southerners
• John C. Calhoun called it Tariff of Abominations.
• Calhoun believed in Nullification and also believed
the right of state to secede from the Union.
• Daniel Webster opposed Nullification

South Carolina’s Action & Jackson’s Reaction
• South Carolina declared the Tariff Act of 1832
invalid
• The State wanted to secede from the union.
• Jackson threatened to send troops to force the
State to obey the law.
• Henry Clay helped work out a solution to keep the
state in the union.

Jackson & the National Bank
• Jackson Hated the National Bank – Bank of the
United States – as something that serves the elites
• He withdrew the government money out of the
Bank
• By 1836 the Bank went out of business.
• His party members angered by his action started
the Whig Party.

Jackson’s Legacy
• Martin Van Buren had to deal with Financial Mess
created by Jackson.
• Financial Panic happened in 1837 causing a
recession/depression.
• Democrats lost to Whigs in 1840
• Whigs were not able to implement their programs
as President Harrison died and John Tyler disagreed
with their Policies
