0. “Afterschool Round up” – J.C. Penney Cares REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS (RFA) Background and Overview: The J.C. Penney Co. started this new philanthropic initiative to provide “after-school” academic and social development activities for youth. Compelling national research reveals that one in four American students are unsupervised daily between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to Vice-President Mike Theilmann. During these hours, youth are at a greater risk of involvement in drug abuse, crime and other illegal and destructive behaviors. The J.C. Penney Co., Inc. has more than 1,100 stores throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. All stores are actively involved in helping to narrow the education gap. Theilmann indicated that the company is collecting 100 million virtual pennies (i.e., $1,000,000.00) to donate to this cause. You can see the “pennies from heaven” initiative in various ads in JCP Back-to-School marketing.
