HW: BRING OUT NOTES FOR A STAMP What will we learn today? Standard 10.1.1 Analyze the similarities and differences in JudeoChristian and Greco-Roman views of law, reason and faith, and duties of the individual. • WARM UP 5: What impact does religion have on your life? 1 Explain the importance of Judaism’s values. • Describe how Christianity spread and helped further democratic ideas. • Analyze the impact of the Renaissance and Reformation on democratic thinking. In what ways did Judaism and Christianity influence the development of democracy? Judaism and Christianity taught individual worth, ethical values, and the need to fight injustice. The religions of Ancient Greece and Rome (Greco-Roman) were polytheistic. Polytheism- The belief in multiple gods “Poly”= many Clip: Roman Sacrifice Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are the 3 major monotheistic religions of the world. Monotheism- The belief in one god “Mono”= One The religion of the Hebrews is called Judaism. Judaism started around 1800 BC (with Abraham) Unlike groups around them, the Jews were monotheists, who believed in one perfect, knowing and all powerful God. Jew’s holy book: The Torah (aka Old Testament) Like the Greeks and Romans, the Jews had a written code of laws that God gave their prophet Moses about 1200 BC in the form of the Ten Commandments. Jewish religion emphasizes each person’s worth and responsibility to make moral choices. Jewish law focuses on morality and ethics and urges people to oppose injustice and oppression. Clip: 10 Commandments Clip: 10 Commandments Christianity developed around the 1st century AD According to Christian’s holy book the Bible, Jesus of Nazareth was born around 6 BC His preaching contained many ideas from Jewish tradition, such as monotheism and the principles of the Ten Commandments. Clip: Dirty Christians Clip: Feeding Christians to Lions Rome aids the spread of Judaism and Christianity by exiling the Jews in 70 AD and later in 380 AD by adopting the Christian religion. Clip: Constantine Accepts Christianity Clip: Council of Nicaea Islam was another monotheistic religion that taught equality of all persons and individual worth. It developed in southwest Asia in the early 600’s AD, and was based on the teachings of Muhammad. He emphasized the dignity and brotherhood of all human beings and unity of all people required a tolerance of different groups within the community. Muslims (followers of Islam) were required to offer help to those in need and rulers had to obey the same laws as those they ruled. In 1517 (16th century) a man by the name of Martin Luther starts the Protestant reformation. The Reformation challenges the Catholic church. Martin Luther • • • As a result Protestantism branches off of Catholicism Divides Christianity into Protestantism and Catholicism. – Other major Christian religions develop around the 16th century (Lutheranism, Anglicanism, Calvinism). The Reformation promoted ideas that are important in the development of democracy (importance of the Individual). Assignment: Answer Questions What are two beliefs of Judaism? Why do Jews believe that people are responsible for their own choices? What is the key difference between Christian and Jewish beliefs? What is the difference between Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian religion? What are 2 teachings of Muhammad? How did all three religions shape democratic ideas? HOMEWORK: CURRENT EVENTS DUE WEDNESDAY!
