Krebs Cycle Puzzle: Concept Map of Oxidation/Reduction Reactions:
Pyruvate is converted Acetyl CoA by the removal of one CO2 group.
1. The two carbon Acetyl CoA is added to a 4 carbon compound producing a 6 carbon compound called citric acid (citrate). A
separate reaction isomerizes the citrate to isocitrate.

Step 1
6 C compound
Step 2
2. The isomerized form of citrate has a CO2 group removed, and the resulting 5 carbon compound is then oxidized, reducing the
coenzyme _______________ to __________________.
5 C compound
Step 3
3. This is a complex step since three different things happened to the 5 carbon compound. (1). A CO2 group is removed. (2).The
resulting 4 carbon compound is then oxidized, reducing the coenzyme_______________ to _________________. (3). Then a
coenzyme called C0-A-SH is unstably bonded to the 4 carbon compound.
4 C compound
Step 4
4. The 4 carbon compound has the C0-A-SH group removed, and the Co-A-SH group is replaced by a PO4 group. The PO4 group is
then transferred to GDP producing GTP. GTP transfers the PO4 group to ADP producing ________________.
4 C compound
Step 5
5. The 4 carbon compound is oxidized, reducing FADH to ___________________. The removal of the H during oxidation produces
a compound with a double bond in the carbon backbone.
4 C compound
Step 6
6. A water molecule is added which rearranges the bonds in the 4 carbon compound, and removes the double bond.
4 C compound
Step 7
7. The 4 carbon compound is again oxidized, reducing the coenzyme _________________ to __________________. The product of
this reaction completes the cycle since it can now join with another Acetyl C0A and enter at step 1 of the cycle.
