Managed Solutions for DNS/DHCP Server Management Technical Brief Issues of Network Availability or Accessibility are Dynamic NOT Static Agentless solutions: ■■ Do not scale ■■ Are not real-time ■■ Increase network traffic ■■ unnecessarily ■■ Create potential network availability issues ■■ Create potential network accessibility problems ■■ Do not meet the requirement of today’s networks Today’s network environments are not only growing exponentially, but also they are more complex than ever. With enterprises engaging in provisioning applications, devices, services, and protocols, a managed solution becomes a non-consideration when you consider the vast and constantly expanding amount of devices requiring network availability and accessibility. Many organizations today are actively configuring, deploying and managing enterprise initiatives; employing the use of VoIP applications, RFID tags, wireless endpoints including notebooks and cellular devices, virtual servers and clients, and IPv6. In these environments, a managed solution is necessary because networks and the nodes on the networks are dynamic and not static. For example, every time a dynamic network event takes place, a management agent passes that information for that specific event (DDNS update or DHCP lease renewal/assignment) to Proteus in real-time. These updates do not generate voluminous network traffic or overhead, and only deal with the DNS/DHCP in question. In today’s environment, this new network fabric best handled by IPAM solutions, like Proteus, is the only alternative to ensuring that devices, endpoint products, applications, and users experience the “five 9’s” of network availability and accessibility. In this scenario, whenever a change is made to the data associated with the IP address, Proteus is simultaneously updating the DNS/DHCP database. Alternatively whenever the information residing in the network database managed by a DNS/DHCP network appliance is made, the data associated with the IP address is updated. Today’s networks require dynamic functionality in the data they create and manage. Agentless An unmanaged solution, including products without agents or management systems of some sort, relies entirely on polling events. Imagine the case of a large network with hundreds of DNS/DHCP servers. The only manner, in which these managed solutions to be updated with network and IP data, is to poll ALL DNS/DHCP servers. When you consider that an enterprise has many tens or hundreds of DNS/DHCP servers and hundreds of thousands of IP addresses, this polling technique quickly becomes a daunting task that is not very pragmatic or useful. Considering the immense amount of network traffic and overhead created and the fact that IP addresses are not updated all the time - in real time, network availability and accessibility problems now become a real challenge and manifests itself in the most public manner possible – the entire business and marketplace knowing that your network is down, unavailable, or inaccessible. The fact is that unmanaged solutions rely on polling to update network centric and IP centric data, which also lack the detail and the organization that only managed solutions, such as Proteus, can provide. Until this polling is performed, these solutions has no way of knowing that there has been a change in network information. Simply put, IPAM solutions that lack an agent or dynamic management system do not scale and do not meet the requirments of today network administrators in managing the network fabric called IP Address Management. Proteus IPAM Platform provides visibility, predictability, and management of your IP Address Environment. This includes: Proteus IPAM Real Time Agents ■■ Scalability, ■■ High availability, ■■ Crossover failover ■■ capabilities, ■■ Real-time access to network and IP centric data, ■■ Workflow management , ■■ Granular policy ■■ administration, ■■ Automatic IP discovery and reconciliation, ■■ Monitoring of remote appliances, ■■ Restoration of any deleted data pertaining to domains, networks or IP addresses, ■■ Quick navigation ■■ functionality to view entire networks, ■■ Network event notification, ■■ Enforcement of corporate naming policies; and, ■■ Accurate modeling of network domains for anticipating requirements for IP addresses Real Time Real Time Adonis Adonis Windows + PMAW ©2008.
