THE 2014 NEWSLETTER OF THE President: Ken Hyde Past President: Serkis Isikbay James Baldwin Chris Crane Dave Detterline Lana Helms Paul Sauget Kara Smith Michelle Wittler Derrick Young Chief Resident: Emily Taing-Watson The IUOAA is an organization committed to excellence for our orthodontic profession, our school, and our alumni President’s Message Happy summer! Hope you are enjoying everything summer has to offer: No after-school rush at the office; summer hours; sunshine and more daylight; world cup soccer; another class of orthodontists graduate and start their new lives… On Friday, July 11th another seven IU Orthodontic residents instantly become alumni. They have been working extremely hard for the past two years and they are more than ready to take on the world. You are welcome to come to the graduation and welcome them as colleagues and fellow IU Ortho alumni in the greatest dental specialty. We have members just starting their careers, rookies, seasoned veterans and members who have turned in their gloves, but we all have IU Orthodontics in common and great stories to share. Even though I love summer, I am excited about this fall. The Great Lakes Ortho meeting is coming to Chicago and the IU State of the Department Katherine Kula Diplomate, American Board of Orthodontics Jarabak Endowed Professor Chair, Department of Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics Well, the orthodontic department has done it again! The year has been good, good, good! In September, 2013, the Graduate Program passed accreditation with flying colors. No problems. In fact, verbally we were told that we had a very good program. We were the first Orthodontic Program to be evaluated under the new Commission on Dental Accreditation guidelines and interpreted and carried out all the requirements well. The third Burstone Biomechanics Initiative Symposium was held in the fall with some excellent speakers on the topic of Three-Dimensional Biomechanics. David Hatcher started the program telling how important the use of 3D imaging was to diagnosis and to understanding biomechanics. Some of our speakers were home grown – Sean Liu, Ahmed Ghoneima and Rodrigo Viecilli. They presented some of their 3D clinical research. Charlie really liked the program and also passed on some of his knowledge in a lecture. Sean is busy organizing the fourth Burstone Symposium. Congratulations to Ahmed Ghoneima for numerous achievements this year! After completing the Michael Matlof Memorial Teaching Fellowship Award, Ahmed received the Orhan C. Tuncay Teaching Fellowship Award from the AAOF. He won the Charlie Schultz Award at the 2014 AAO meeting for his research entitled “Assessment of the reliability of linear and angular dental measurements using OrthoMechanics Sequential Analyzer” and took first place at the Moyers Symposium in the junior faculty category for his poster. His research endeavors in three dimensional imaging resulted in two patents. Ahmed will finish his American orthodontic program in July and will start supervising graduate orthodontic patients. This summer, he will assist research at IUSD as president of the Indiana American Association of Dental Research. Continued on page 2 Continued on page 2 1 President’s Message (cont’d) Ortho Alumni are cruising Lake Michigan on Friday evening, September 12th during the meeting. This is going to be fun! Does anyone remember the IAO Chicago Meeting cruise many years ago? Be sure to sign up. Don’t miss the boat. Have you checked the IU Ortho Alumni Facebook page? We would love to have you post a photo or two and let us know what’s going on at your office. Someone out there would like to see your smiling face! It has been a fun year for involvement with students. Pictured in this article are dental students in the recent 5K Run. Also, I have included a picture of Lafayette, IN., orthodontist, Steve Powell, in the Regatta with fellow dentists and dental students. If you get a chance, stay involved with students in the orthodontic department and at IUSD. I volunteer teach one day a month and it is a meaningful opportunity. Enjoy the rest of your summer! Dr. Ken Hyde IU Ortho Class of 1977 State of the Department (cont’d pg. 3) Congratulations also to Kelton Stewart! He was the national winner of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon’s Charles Craig Teaching Award for demonstrating excellence and innovation in teaching and, as a result, was awarded the IUPUI Prestigious External Award Recognition. His excellence in teaching was also recognized within the University and he received the IU Trustees Teaching Award. Kelton is on the Board of Directors of the Student Clinicians of the American Dental Association (SCADA). And, very importantly, he achieved Diplomate status in the American Board of Orthodontics this year and has accepted the Graduate Orthodontic Program Directorship as of July 1, 2014. However, we miss Jim Baldwin and Irina Leyvand. Jim retired this year and so we threw a big party for the 89 year old instructor who helped so many people. The party was a huge success! It was held at Maggiano’s and former and present students and faculty came to tell him how much they enjoyed working with him. Jim was promised a University rocking chair, although we are still trying to track its delivery. If you need his address, call Shannon or Amy our administrative assistants. Thank you, Jim, for all that you have done for the department and all the faculty and students. Irina took early retirement with plans to spend her time doing all kinds of work, including taking care of her granddaughter. Irina is still looking for her chair too - so maybe problem based learning is never really finished. We look forward to visiting in the future with Irina. This year is the third year of the IUPUI Signature Center Award for the Three-Dimensional Imaging of the Craniofacial Complex Center (3D ICCC) in which multiple orthodontic faculty (Ahmed Ghoneima, Sean Liu, Kelton Stewart and Jie Chen) led by Katherine Kula received $300,000 to develop research in 3D Imaging. Multiple collaborations (eg. Riley’s Craniofacial Team, Biology, Anthropology, Adult Sleep Medicine, Pediatric Sleep Medicine, Computer Science and Informatics, Music) have been set up across campus utilizing the facilities and personnel for several research projects. Many of these collaborations have produced publications and future grants proposals with collaborators. John Starbuck, our postdoctoral fellow, received a Certificate of Reviewing Excellence from the Forensic Science International Journal for being an outstanding reviewer. John has a PhD in anthropology and has been central to a number of the publications and collaborations coming out of the 3D ICCC. The department is building its faculty again! Lana Helms joined us as adjunct clinical faculty this year. Tasha Metzger Hall will complete her craniofacial fellowship at Case Western this summer and return as an adjunct faculty to care for these patients. Mike Frazier will put in more time in the department to help guide orthognathic surgeries required for these patients. Mike won the Outstanding Faculty Award at the graduation last year! 2 A new faculty member, Achint Utreja, who received an MS in orthodontics and a PhD at the University of Connecticut will assume the duties of the Director of the Predoctoral Program and will continue his research in bone and genetics. The Big Mac is back! Jim Macri has ended his hiatus and will be back this fall to focus on TMD issues and Invisalign in the postgraduate clinic. Steve Lindauer, Chair of the Virginia Commonwealth University Orthodontic Department and Editor of Angle Orthodontist, was the Mock Board Evaluator of the second year graduate students’ cases. He was impressed with the organization of presentation and with the quality of cases this year. So we keep on improving! Welcome to another group of incoming graduate students: Branson Billings from Missouri, Mohammad Aldosari from Saudi Arabia who is also finishing his PhD at IUSD, Jesse Mitchem from California, Irene Cho from Canada, Jamie Lazin from Pennsylvania, Theodore (Tadziu) Kula from Indianapolis, and Vidya Bettagere from Indianapolis. Their cvs are impressive and we are counting on them to continue to strengthen our department. Our graduating students have their future mapped out already. Dr. He Kyong Kang has accepted a faculty position in the University of Detroit-Mercy Orthodontic Department. Emily Taing-Watson is going into practice in Fort Wayne. Emily McCrea is starting practice in South Bend. Manuel Hernandez-Garcia is returning to Puerto Rico to join his father in practice similar to Leslie Glupker who will join her father’s practice in Michigan. Ahmed Ghoneima continues his teaching and research at IUSD. Billy Chai will be working with Tyler Cole in Arizona. In the meantime, the second year students (Emily Longwith, Gretter Cardo, David Mika, Varghah Lotfi, Richard Hannah, Brian LaBlonde, and Nozha Sawan) are trying to survive clinical duties, exams and research. Bless their hearts! Our fellowship program is going strong. Two fellows (Jennifer Schaetzel from Nebraska and Hsin-Yin Yeh from China) will participate in research projects with the faculty to increase their competitiveness of their application to orthodontics. We look forward to seeing all the alumni at either the GLAO cruise in September or at the AAO meeting in San Francisco. Otherwise, you’ll come down sometime. We would love to see you! Tony Puntillo’s lecture at the 2014 AAO Meeting on “Eliminating Impressions from Your Practice” was so well received that he has been asked to present again for the 2015 AAO Meeting. Tony’s expertise is also used as an Examiner for the ABO. Mike Koufos and his team has been competing in national interdisciplinary treatment competitions and doing well. Darlene Arnold was honored with the 2013 Staff of the Year Award. Brenda McClarnon was awarded the 2014 Staff of the Year Award Department Publications J. Starbuck, A. Ghoneima, K. Kula. I joined dad at Coghlan Orthodontics in Bloomington after finishing the orthodontic program and enjoyed practicing with him until he retired in 2011. It was a blessing to have such a great teacher to help me during the early years. I am still married to my best friend and dental school classmate, Elaine. We will be celebrating 27 years this summer. She has a general dentistry practice with her sister, Karen Hrisomalos, that she joined in 1988. Our lives are full and centers around our three children. Our oldest son, Matthew, is starting his senior year at IU majoring in Chemistry. He will be applying to medical school in the fall. He has turned into a bigger IU Basketball fan then me. I think it can be traced back to the IU vs Kentucky game his freshman year. He waited outside in the general admission student ticket line braving the freezing cold. Coach Crean came out and signed his ticket and treated the kids to hot chocolate. Of course, when Christian Watford hit the shot at the buzzer to beat #1 Kentucky and they stormed the court he was hooked. Just in case you haven’t seen it here is the link. Matthew is in there somewhere. I was there (not on the court ) and have seen it at least a hundred times but it still gives me chills! www.youtube.com/ watch?v=kRqTTT50H0M Our twin daughters, Sarah and Megan, just finished high school where they spent a lot of their free time playing tennis. Their tennis game is much better Our oldest daughter Brooke and her husband Dr. Mark Redd finished dental school several years ago and moved back home to Ogden to begin a dental practice. They have four of our granddaughters. than mine but they still play with me. Of course they play nice so they don’t make me feel too bad about my game. They both are looking forward to starting IU this fall and will be majoring in some science. Megan and Sarah are looking towards medical or dental school down the road. Hopefully there is a 3rd Generation in the future at Coghlan Orthodontics. As a family we enjoy traveling, playing tennis, and just being together. We have lots of wonderful memories from all over the world and look forward to making many more. Dr. Jeff Shepherd ‘89 My wife Marie and I will be celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary this summer. We have four children: Brooke, Casey, McCall and Shelby. The older three are married and we have a wedding planned for our youngest daughter in July. We are the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren-six granddaughters Our only son Casey and his wife Britney currently live in Nashville TN where he is in his fourth year of a six year oral surgery program at Vanderbilt. They have one of our granddaughters. McCall is our third oldest and is married to Ryan Ward who works in marketing for Browning Arms. They have our last granddaughter and our only grandson as well as the one on the way. Shelby plans to marry Shaun Bowen in July and hopefully the grandchildren will continue. We will then be “empty nesters” as they say. I opened my South Ogden practice in 1989 and then opened a second office in Eden, a small community 30 minutes east of Ogden surrounded by beautiful Utah mountains and ski resorts. We are currently building a new office in that same community and hope to move into it in August. I have served on the Utah association of orthodontists board of directors and served as president of that association in 2004. When I am not in the office or playing with the grandchildren, you can usually find me on a Utah stream with a fly rod in my hand. Class Notes Jeanne McDonald said “I just rode my bicycle cross-country. We started March 7 in San Diego and finished in St. Augustine, FL, on May 1.” Larry Roberts reported “I just finished my second stem cell transplant. So far so good.” 5 B All Alumni are Invited to Attend The Class of 2014 Orthodontic Graduation Dinner July 11, 2014 Honoring the Class of 2014 Graduates: Yuyao Chai Ahmed Ghoneima Leslie Glupker Manuel Hernandez-Garcia He Kyong Kang Emily McCrea Emily Taing-Watson 6:30 p.m. Reception 7:00 p.m. Dinner & Program at the Skyline Club One American Square Indianapolis For more information contact Karen Jones at 317-274-8959 or [email protected]. b 6 The Indiana University Orthodontic Alumni Association cordially invites you to join fellow alumni and friends on a Chicago Champagne Dinner Cruise aboard the Odyssey Chicago Friday, September 12, 2014 6:30 p.m. Boarding 7:30 – 10:30 p.m. Cruise Departs from the south side of Navy Pier 600 East Grand Avenue, Chicago $125 per person (Includes a three hour scenic cruise with nighttime views of the Chicago skyline, Sears Tower,John Hancock Building, and Shedd’s Aquarium to name a few highlights. Speakers for the evening included Dr. Katherine Kula, Dr. Serkis Isikbay, IUSD Dean John Williams, Dr. Gene Roberts, and Dr. George Vail. They shared their thoughts and memories with Dr. Baldwin. Dr. Serkis Isikbay, IUOAA Past President, presented to Dr. Baldwin, on behalf of alumni, a book filled with photos from his past 56 8 years of service. Alumni sent in memories they had with Dr. Baldwin as well as personal notes that were included in the book. The Dean presented a resolution proclaiming it was “Dr. James Baldwin Day” at IUSD. Dr. Katherine Kula, Chair and Program Director, had a photo board of Dr. Baldwin that was signed by dinner attendees with personal notes. It was a memorable evening to honor a wonderful teacher, mentor, orthodontist, and friend. 9 2014 AAO Reception in New Orleans We had a great reception in New Orleans on Saturday, April 26, at the New Orleans Hilton Riverside. Alumni heard an update from Dr. Katherine Kula, Chair and Program Director, Graduate Orthodontics, and visited with residents and fellow alumni. Thank you to everyone who attended. Below are some photos from the reception. 10 Resident Update by Emily Watson Greetings from the IU Orthodontic Residents! The end of another school year is quickly approaching and highly anticipated for both classes. For the second year residents, the end of a long journey is finally in sight. With the completion of the ABO written exam, we are all working hard on finishing board writeups and transferring/reviewing our cases with the first year residents. Most of our class also has practices lined up to join after completion of the program. The first year residents are very busy treatment planning and taking records for the new incoming class as well as experiencing for the first time having two chairs to manage instead of one. They are looking forward to becoming the new second year class. They have a number of exciting meetings this year including GORP in Ann Arbor, Michigan and also the Tweed Course in Tuscon, Arizona. This year has not been all work though. Both classes attended GORP last August at UNC in Chapel Hill. The second years also went to Sheboygan, Wisconsin to visit the AO office and do some chartered fishing. Most of us caught one! Thanks to the gracious support from the Alumni Association, many of the residents were able to attend the Annual AAO conference in New Orleans. We will be welcoming the new incoming class starting the first week in July. All that is left this year is our annual Arbuckle Open Golf Tournament and graduation! We are truly thankful to all the full-time and part-time faculty members for their time and expertise in helping us become great orthodontists! 11 Volume 3. No 4. Accountable Care Organizations Present Key Opportunities for the Dental Profession Author: Marko Vujicic, Ph.D.; Kamyar Nasseh, Ph.D. --------------------------------------- Dental care is not generally included as a core component within today’s Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). Where dental services are incorporated, it is mainly only at the level of facilitated referral or co-location. One key reason is that existing ACOs focus on Medicare populations and Medicare does not include dental benefits. There is also a perception that most dental providers and plans are accustomed to providing care according to frequency limits defined by dental insurance policies rather than a patient’s dental risk profile. ACOs could help bridge the gap between oral and general health care, improve coordination of care, and help reduce overall health care costs. They also provide an opportunity to re-examine the role of oral care providers within the health care team. Since dental care for children is an essential health benefit under the Affordable Care Act, the most immediate opportunities are with the pediatric population. Having recently completed, multiple IU campus commencements, the Indiana Dental Association annual meeting and the IUSD Dental Alumni Reunion, we are focused on IUSD’s summer session as we prepare to launch year 2 of the IUSD—International Dental program (IDP) on July 1 and welcome the new DDS, advanced and allied students. The DDS and advanced students will be here early July, and allied students arrive in August. I thank you, each of our faculty and staff, for a very productive 2013-14 academic year. In addition, I thank those many faithful faculty and staff who honored our graduates by attending one or both commencement programs. Our journey continues to advance the Vision and Mission of IUSD to make Indiana University School of Dentistry one of the best dental schools of the 21st century. • The Only Constant is Change…….. Organizations must adapt and change to better address the ever changing environment around them and change is moving into high gear at IUSD this summer. First, I thank the many faculty and staff who have been so integral to the life and work of IUSD for many years who have or will be retiring this year. They are listed below: Faculty and Staff Retirees • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • *deceased Dr. William Babler Dr. James Baldwin Dr. Michael Baumgartner Dr. William Browning Jan Cox Sue Crum Irma Crumpton Annetta Hall Elizabeth Hatcher Susan Hayden Dr. Joseph Legan Dr. Irina Leyvand Octavia McIlwain Marilyn Richards Sheryl Roberts Laverne Smith Dr. Lech Switalski Dr. Margot VanDis Dr. James Weddell Charlene Ellis* Oral Biology Orthodontics Pediatric Dentistry Restorative Library Publications Oral Surgery Oral Health Research Faculty Affairs Oral Health Research Endodontics Orthodontics Oral Pathology, Medicine & Radiology Oral Health Research Oral Health Research Central Services and Sterilization Oral Biology Oral Pathology, Medicine & Radiology Pediatric Dentistry Oral Health Research Yrs of Service 14 years 56 years 41 years 6 years 17 years 40 years 17 years 21 years 37 years 25 years 24 years 24 years 30 years 28 years 18 years 41 years 20 years 24 years 35 years 20 years Indiana University School of Dentistry 12 Page 1 First Friday….IUSD Dean’s Update June 6, 2014 Second, we continue the building feasibility study for the former Wishard property with plans to enhance the educational, clinical and research aspects of IUSD for the next 40 years. Smith Group master planning architects are working on plans for Interprofessional Education Programs (IPE) and the potential incorporation of IUSD into the expanding IU health center concept. If you missed the article, see the recent Alumni Bulletin on a potential new future. Third, calendar changes better align curriculum, provide for synchronized breaks and allow student research and community based educational experiences as well as provide a break for students from the rigors of dental school. Fourth, clinic changes in schedule and facilities have been of concern for D3 and D2 DDS students given expansion in class size enrollments. Clinical Affairs regularly monitors patient flow and student outcomes and productivity. Comp Care and Restorative “points” now closely approximate the previous 2 year DDS classes (see details below). Class: as of May 27, 2014 Comp Care Points Restorative Points DDS-2015 (D3) Average: 199 S.D.=49 Average: 87 S.D.=32 DDS-2014 Average: 216 S.D.=47 Average: 90 S.D.=32 DDS-2013 Average: 189 S.D.=49 Average: 90 S.D.=33 Fifth, extramural clinical site changes: Grassy Creek (6 ops) closing June 30, 2014; Cottage Corner (8 ops) closing December 19, 2014; opening of Regenstrief (ops 12) July 2014 (planned); Marion Community based site (12 ops) in discussion. Sixth, up to fourteen IDP students will be accepted into the second year of the IUSD IDP program beginning July 1, 2014. Therefore……… The only constant is change, continuing change, inevitable change that is the dominant factor in society today. No sensible decision can be made any longer without taking into account not only the world as it is, but the world as it will be. — Isaac Asimov • Welcome..Terri A.
