DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS COURSE TITLE: AHSA GRADE LEVEL: 12 TIME SPAN: One semester DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to increase the students’ proficiency in computative and critical thinking skills associated with mathematics and to prepare them for standardized tests that measure such skills. A key component of the program is individualizing according to prior test results CONTENT: AREAS TO BE STRESSED: STUDENT ACTIVITIES: Number sense, concepts, and applications Spatial sense and geometry Data Analysis, probability, statistics and discrete mathematics Patterns, functions, and algebra Critical Thinking Skills Active Involvement of Students Number and Operation Sense Estimation Skills Using the calculator to solve mathematical problems Practice in higher order thinking skills Practice in applying critical thinking skills to solving problems similar to those reflected in the NCTM standards and New Jersey’s Eleventh Grade High School Proficiency Assessment Practice in numerical activities Practice in the use of calculators as facilitators INDICATORS OF ACCOMPLISHMENT: The student will be able to: Demonstrate the ability to use specific mathematical skills needed to solve problems Demonstrate the use of specific strategies for solving problems Demonstrate the ability to conduct numerical operations Solve problems that relate to the fundamentals of Geometry and Algebra Analyze data Recognize patterns and functions Demonstrate the use of a calculator in solving problems AHSA (continued) EVALUATION: Classwork Homework Portfolio Tests/Quizzes – stressing open-ended questions Notebook Student participation
