Courtland Cinemas
AKA: Eastland Cinemas
4226 E Court St
1981-January 2009, May 2011-
The Courtland Cinemas was first opened in 1969 as
the single screen Eastland Mall Theatre when the
Eastland Mall opened by the United Detroit
Theatres division of ABC Theatres. When ABC
(originally United Paramount Theatres) left the
theatre business, Plitt Theatres took it over. When
Plitt left the Flint market in 1981, Redstone (owner
of the nearby dominant Showcase Cinemas in
Burton) took control of the Eastland Mall Theatre.
They twinned it, then when the mall was renamed
Courtland Center, renamed the twin cinema
accordingly. Later on in the 1980s, they closed the
Courtland Cinemas after the nearby Showcase
Cinemas added more screens. It remained closed
for many years with several unsuccessful attempts
to reopen it before Silver Cinemas reopened it after
expansion and renovation making it a 6 screen
multiplex with all-stadium seating, the first theatre in
the Flint area with all stadium seating, calling it the
Silver Cinemas. National Amusements, as the
Showcase Cinemas owners are known by now,
quickly bought out the rival theatre, renaming it to
its old name Courtland Cinemas. Today, it’s a
second-run bargain priced theatre. It was reopened
by NCG Cinemas in 2011.
This theatre was seen in Michael’s Moore Bowling
for Columbine.

The Genesee Valley Theatres was built around
1973 as a twin theater, with an addition built around
1977 making it a four screen. It was built by
Butterfield Theatres and was sold to Kerasotes
Theatres around 1985. They split the original two
auditoriums to make it a 6-screen theater. National
Amusements bought the theater a decade later. It
was closed when National Amusements opened
the Cinema 10 nearby. The Genesee Valley
Theatres was torn down in 2001 to make room for
new retail development.
