FDR: Ed Asner
Bringing to life one of America's most beloved and influential presidents, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, FDR
(starring Ed Asner) focuses primarily on the political figure's battle with polio and reveals the humanity and grace
of the man who led the country through some of its most difficult times, including the Great Depression and World
War II. FDR is based on the play Sunrise at Campobello by Dore Schary, which was originally produced on
Broadway by the Theatre Guild and ran 556 performances — one of the longest running plays of all time.

John Waters: This Filthy World
“This Filthy World” is John Waters’ one-man show: a “vaudeville” act that celebrates the film career and
obsessive tastes of the man William Burroughs once called “The Pope of Trash.” Focusing in on Waters’ early
negative artistic influences and his fascination with true crime, exploitation films, fashion lunacy, and the
extremes of sexual politics, this joyously devious and continuously updated monologue is a rally cry against the
tyranny of good taste and serves as a call to arms for filth followers everywhere.
In his 50-year career, Waters has created one of the most influential and beloved bodies of work in all of
American cinema. His first six features are enduring staples of the midnight-movie circuit: maniacal exercises in
high-camp shock humor, each with the emotional pitch of an opera and content that wouldn’t be out of place in a
psychological text on sexual fetishes. Waters was influenced by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard, Walt Disney, Andy
Warhol, Russ Meyer, Ingmar Bergman, and Herschell Gordon Lewis.
In 1972 Waters created what would become the most "notorious" film in the American independent cinema of the
1970's, "Pink Flamingos". The film went on to become a smash success at midnight screenings in the U.S. and
all over the world. Waters followed the success of "Pink Flamingos" with three more pictures, spanning the
remainder of the decade: "Female Trouble", "Desperate Living" and "Polyester" — a wide-screen comic
melodrama starring Divine and Tab Hunter.
In "Hairspray" (1988), Waters created "an almost big-budget comedy extravaganza about star-struck teen-age
celebrities in 1962, their stage mothers and their quest for mental health." The film was a box office and critical
success and starred the then-unknown Ricki Lake, Deborah Harry, the late Sonny Bono, Jerry Stiller, Pia Zadora
and Ric Ocasek.
The success of "Hairspray" brought Waters major Hollywood backing for his next feature, "Cry-Baby" (1990), a
juvenile delinquent musical comedy satire, starring Johnny Depp. In 1994, Waters released "Serial Mom", the
well-reviewed, socially un-redeeming comedy starring Kathleen Turner and Sam Waterston, which was the
closing night attraction at that year's Cannes Film Festival.
Concurrent to his career as a filmmaker, John Waters is also an author and photographer whose work — first
represented by American Fine Arts and presently, the Marianne Boesky Galley in New York — has been shown
in galleries all over the world since 1992.

The Larry Dunn Anthology of Earth Wind & Fire
We are kicking off the film festival with our BIGGEST concert event EVER: The Larry Dunn Anthology of Earth
Wind & Fire — nine musicians, four singers and one magical night of music!
Former keyboard mastermind for Earth Wind & Fire (EW&F), Larry Dunn wrote, produced and arranged many of
the band's legendary hits from 1972 to 1983 and performed on them all — and last year, performed, produced
and arranged three songs on Earth Wind & Fire’s latest album, “Now, Then & Forever”. Dunn helped transform
EW&F into one of the all-time most successful R&B/funk/soul bands in the world, with sales of more than 100
million albums worldwide, six Grammys, 13 Grammy nominations, four American Music Awards, 32 Gold and
Platinum/Multi-Platinum records, a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame in 2000 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010 as well as many other industry awards.
In addition to playing keyboards, organ, synthesizer, piano, clavinet, kalimba and about anything else sitting
around, Dunn held the position as EW&F’s longtime musical director. In addition, he rehearsed Earth Wind & Fire
for live stage performances and wrote many of the musical segues and medleys. His creative influence can be
felt in such classics as "Shining Star," "Spirit," "Be Ever Wonderful," "Runnin'," "See The Light," "Let Me Talk,"
"And Love Goes On," "Jupiter," as well as other melodies that will live on in the hearts of fans and popular music
lovers alike. As one of the key people behind the scenes, much of the group's musical success can be attributed
to him.
Continuing in that vein of musical style and artistic nuance, Dunn has brought together some of the world's
greatest musical talents to recreate the Larry Dunn Anthology of Earth Wind & Fire.
Dunn's unique rhythmic style, combined with artistic composing and arranging talent, meld into a legendary
performance with music’s greatest talents. The set list includes favorite and memorable hits and — maybe
something we have not yet heard. Larry Dunn’s distinctive groove, funky sync and tight polish will be featured as
the special opening act of the Festival on Friday, February 20 at the Sedona Performing Arts Center. It will be a
great way to get the party started for all the special events and movies ahead!

Luke and Andrew Wilson Event: Satellite Beach
Join brothers Luke and Andrew Wilson and Steve Eckelman for a special screening of their award-winning short
film "Satellite Beach" and a conversation about independent filmmaking!
"Satellite Beach" follows the unique journey of the Endeavour space shuttle as it travels through the streets of
Los Angeles to the California Science Center and the final move of the Atlantis space shuttle to the Kennedy
Space Center. Watch as Warren Flowers, a devoted and unlikely shuttle manager navigates the missions on his
own accord while the citizens, reporters, and officials are perplexed by his involvement.
The film was directed by both Wilson brothers, directed by Luke (and starring him as well) and produced by
Eckelman (who is also featured in the film). Join the three for a lively conversation about independent filmmaking
and the art of writing, directing, acting and producing.
The event may also include a screening of their feature film "The Wendell Baker Story", which stars Luke and the
third Wilson brother, Owen.

Orson Welles' Last Movie: The Making of "The Other Side of the Wind"
Between 1970-1976, Orson Welles worked on a film entitled, "The Other Side of the Wind" — the story of a great
director (played by John Huston) trying to make a comeback movie in the New Hollywood of the early 1970s.
Though the film was ultimately never completed, it has remained an object of fascination for Wellesian's and
movie aficionado's alike, while news of its possible release making the cover of the New York Times in late 2014.
Join us for a discussion about the film, it's legendary director and the colorful story behind it's making, with a
panel that includes: Welles' daughter Beatrice; film producer Filip Jan Rymsza; actors Pat McMahon and Peter
Jason; cameraman Mike Ferris; editor Rick Shore and Josh Karp, author of the forthcoming book "Orson Welles'
Last Movie: The Making of The Other Side of the Wind."

Oxymorons: Ed Asner and Mark Rydell
“Oxymorons” is a live, 40-minute comedy set on two park benches — starring Ed Asner and Mark Rydell, written
and directed by Brian Connors. The delightful production is a play about two brothers as they hash out their
sibling rivalries over anything and everything be it money, women or Lincoln Logs!
The performance will also include a screening of “Good Men” — a 12-minute award-winning short film about the
conspiracy allegations surrounding 9/11. “Good Men” has screened in over 50 film festivals around the world.
Before the Q&A with the audience, the show will feature a retrospective of Ed Asner — winner of 7 Emmy
Awards and 5 Golden Globe Awards, with a career spanning decades in TV and Film. It will also feature a
retrospective of Academy Award-nominee Mark Rydell with clips of his work as both actor and director.

A Twist of Lemmon
“A Twist of Lemmon” — a critically-acclaimed live show — is Chris Lemmon’s heart-warming, musical and
comical exploration of his unique, yet universal, father/son story, couched in the lore of the golden age of
Hollywood, as told by Chris in the voice of his father — Jack Lemmon — one of the most beloved actors of all
times.
Wonderful behind-the-scenes stories, dozens of imitations of some of the world's greatest entertainers. A score
of some of Jack's favorite Gershwin songs, performed by Chris, a classically trained pianist. And all the while, at
its core, an incredibly touching glimpse into a father/son journey through life.
“What was it like to be Jack Lemmon’s son? The one question I was asked more than any other my entire life.
And if you think about it, a pretty difficult question for a kid to try to answer; any kid for that matter. In my case it
was magnified a thousand-fold, because, you see, during the latter part of the 20th century, my father was
probably the world’s most beloved actor. That question has led me on a lifelong journey of discovery. It led me to
write and publish my memoir, and it brings me now to a project four years in the making, my new one man show:
“A Twist of Lemmon”. And the crazy thing is, after all that, I’m not even the best person to answer it. After all I
was just a kid. No, there was someone who had a much clearer view of the impact that “one little question” had
on my formative years: my father, Jack Lemmon. I invite you to join us both, onstage, live, as we both do our best
to make you laugh, cry, and maybe even take a little look inside yourself. We two Lemmons, doing our best to

With a career spanning 30 years, Chris Lemmon has starred in more than 25 feature films, including “Just the
Ticket”, “Lena’s Holiday” and “That’s Life”. He’s starred in television series for all major networks, including
“Knot’s Landing” (CBS), “Studio 59” (ABC), “Brothers & Sisters” (NBC), and most notably Fox's highly-acclaimed,
network-launching situation comedy “Duet”. He graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with degrees in
classical piano and composition, as well as a degree in the theatrical arts, and went on to appear in numerous
stage productions.

“When the goddess of wealth comes, she brings trouble with her, too.” And so it unfolds in Phulambri, a village in
India’s Maharashtra state struggling to maintain its gentle rhythms and traditions in the face of endemic
corruption.
Lonely widow Budhi-distraught since her farmer son, drowning in debt, took his own life-has nonetheless found
comfort and balance among her fellow villagers. Most of them are as poor as she is, but unfailingly generous with
whatever they have, be it goat’s milk for tea or freshly baked fluffy bread in the morning. That delicate balance is
upended the moment a politician shoves a 1,000-rupee note into Budhi’s hands at a campaign rally, setting off a
chain of events that will take her to the brink of despair and back again. With a Technicolor palette and buoyant
original songs, this deeply humanistic morality tale is a feast for the eyes, ears, and brain, and lingers long after
the credits roll.

"Agave is Life" is the story of mankind's symbiotic alliance with the marvelous agave plant, from which tequila,
Mexico's iconic distilled spirit is derived. Told through the lens of archaeological and historical investigations, this
colorful film with both original and traditional folk music relies upon ethnographic materials, archival footage and
interviews to explore ten thousand years of the human-agave relationship. Once a critical resource for huntergatherers living in arid regions of the American Southwest and Latin America, and later playing a role in the rise
of ancient civilizations, agave, the buffalo of plants, was a source of food, drink, textiles, fuel, and medicines. We
learn that this unique desert plant, once embedded in cultural identity, mythology, art, and rituals, faces an
uncertain future. Today, ancient folkways, from fiber craftsmanship to traditional pulque and mescal productions,
are rapidly disappearing. While entrepreneurs and scientists work to turn the tide, a loss of diversity of both
cultivated and wild species may be the ultimate arbitrator.

She is beautiful, alluring, overwhelming and mysterious. She is welcoming and dangerous. She shapes the lives
of all who live in or near her and yet she is vulnerable to the thoughtlessness and vicissitudes of men far away
from her verdant soil. She is the foil by which we can examine our actions and values and see ourselves in her
reflection. Who will win in the long run and what will happen to the Osa is unknown. It is a story of our times
unfolding right now.

From first rehearsal to world premiere, "Ballet 422" takes us backstage at New York City Ballet as Justin Peck, a
young up-and-coming choreographer, crafts a new work. "Ballet 422" illuminates the process behind the creation
of a single ballet within the ongoing cycle of work at one of the world’s great ballet companies.
New York City Ballet, under the artistic direction of Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins, boasts a roster of more
than 90 dancers and a repertory of works by many of the greatest choreographers in the history of the art form.
When 25-year-old NYCB dancer Justin Peck begins to emerge as a promising young choreographer, he is
commissioned to create a new ballet for the Company’s 2013 Winter Season. With unprecedented access to an
elite world, the film follows Peck as he collaborates with musicians, lighting designers, costume designers and his
fellow dancers to create Paz de la Jolla, NYCB’s 422nd new ballet. "Ballet 422" is an unembellished vérité
portrait of a process that has never before been documented at New York City Ballet in its entirety.

"The Battle Over Citizen Kane" is a 1996 documentary about the clash between newspaper mogul William
Randolph Hearst and actor/writer/director Orson Welles over Welles' motion picture "Citizen Kane", which is
widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time.
In "Citizen Kane", Welles plays Charles Foster Kane, whose fictional life partially mirrors that of Hearst's.
However, Chicago inventor and utilities magnate Samuel Insull, Chicago Tribune publisher Robert R. McCormick,
and even Welles' own life were used in creating Kane.
In 1939, based partly on the strength of his imaginative and successful New York plays which were produced
under the aegis of the Mercury Theatre (such as an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Macbeth, which
featured an all-black cast and was set in the jungle), and the infamy of his October 30, 1938 radio broadcast of H.
G. Wells' The War of the Worlds which sent residents of Grover's Mill, New Jersey into a panic, Orson Welles
was able to negotiate a virtually unheard-of two-picture deal with RKO Pictures, the smallest of the 'big five' major
studios in this era. The deal gave him creative control under a budget limit.
"The Battle Over Citizen Kane" also details the lives of Orson Welles and William Randolph Hearst before Citizen
Kane, Hearst's manipulation of the heads of the four largest Hollywood studios: Columbia Pictures, MetroGoldwyn-Mayer, Paramount Pictures, and Warner Bros. to combine their efforts and financial strength to buy the
camera negative of the film from RKO with the express purpose of destroying it, and how the film affected their
lives after the release of the film.
The film will be hosted by Orson's daughter, Beatrice Welles, and Ray Kelly, renowned writer and head of
Wellesnet, the leading online source about the life and career of Orson Welles.

In a career that included such masterpieces as "Citizen Kane", "The Magnificent Ambersons" and "Touch of Evil",
"Chimes at Midnight" stands as Orson Welles’s crowning achievement, a rich, human story that fascinated him
since childhood. It has been seldom seen because of distribution issues. Therefore, its presence at the Sedona
International Film Festival during the centenary of Welles’s birth is truly cause for celebration.
Focusing on themes of friendship and betrayal, Chimes at Midnight examines the shifting relationship between
Prince Hal and his debaucherous companion, the corpulent Sir John Falstaff. The script utilizes text from William
Shakespeare’s Richard II, Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2, Henry V and The Merry Wives of Windsor, as well
as narration from Holinshed’s Chronicles.
"Chimes at Midnight" can trace its lineage back to the Todd School for Boys in Woodstock, Illinois, where a 15year-old Welles in 1930 first adapted several Shakespearean plays into a single work entitled The Winter of Our
Discontent.
With his Mercury Theatre troupe, Welles returned to the concept of re-editing Shakespeare for his 1939 play Five
Kings. Burgess Meredith played Hal opposite Welles’s Falstaff with a score composed by Aaron Copland.
Welles revisited the story with an even greater emphasis on the relationship between Hal and Falstaff for the
1960 Irish stage production "Chimes at Midnight". Welles again played Falstaff, but this time with Keith Baxter as
Hal. Some performances took place at the Gate Theater in Dublin, the stage where Welles began his
professional career at the age of 16.
The motion picture adaptation of "Chimes at Midnight" was filmed in Spain between the fall 1964 and spring 1965
with the backing of Spanish film producers Emiliano Piedra and Ángel Escolano and Harry Saltzman, who coproduced the James Bond films. Alessandro Tasca served as executive producer. As he had done a decade
earlier with Othello, Welles invested his own money into the project.
Welles and Baxter continued in the roles they had played on stage in Belfast and Dublin. They were joined by
John Gielgud (King Henry IV), Margaret Rutherford (Mistress Quickly), and Jeanne Moreau (Doll Tearsheet) with
Ralph Richardson providing narration. Beatrice Welles, the director’s youngest daughter, reprised her stage role
as Falstaff’s young page.
"Chimes at Midnight" contains moments of cinematic spectacle and intimate reflection. It is, as Roger Ebert once
proclaimed, “a film to treasure.”

Shot over the course of five years, "Keep On Keepin' On" depicts the remarkable story of 93-year-old jazz legend
Clark Terry. A living monument to the Golden Era of Jazz, Terry — a mentor to Miles Davis — is among the few
performers ever to have played in both Count Basie’s and Duke Ellington’s bands. In the 1960's, he broke the
color barrier as the first African-American staff musician at NBC — on “The Tonight Show”.
Today, after a life spent working with and teaching the most totemic figures in jazz history, Terry continues to
attract and cultivate budding talents. "Keep On Keepin' On" highlights his friendship with the preternaturally gifted
Justin Kauflin, a blind, 23-year-old piano prodigy who suffers from debilitating stage fright. Not long after Kauflin
is invited to compete in an elite Jazz competition, Terry’s health takes a turn for the worse. As the clock ticks, we
see two friends confront the toughest challenges of their lives.
Kauflin’s work on the film’s score with composer Dave Grusin sets the tone for a story that spans decades,
lifetimes and the entire history of modern Jazz, complete with firsthand anecdotes from Jones and Herbie
Hancock. "Keep On Keepin' On" is crafted with great affection, infused with soulfulness and serendipity.

take care of the young boy. She is surprised by Reggie's intelligence and street smarts but is worried about his
odd behavior of avoiding riding in cars, skipping summer camp and only having one friend, Raj. Little by little they
both learn about each other's lives until an emergency forces Eleanor to visit her family in Upstate New York.
After unsuccessfully trying to find a replacement, she takes Reggie with her where he is exposed to a whole
different world. This is a beautiful story about discovery and acceptance.

"Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles" looks at the remarkable genius of Orson Welles on
the eve of his centenary — the enigma of his career as a Hollywood star, a Hollywood director, and a crucially
important independent filmmaker. Orson Welles' life was magical: a musical prodigy at age 10, a director of
Shakespeare at 14, a painter at 16, a star of stage and radio at 20, romances with some of the most beautiful
women in the world, including Rita Hayworth.
His work was similarly extraordinary, most notably "Citizen Kane", (considered by many to be the most important
movie ever made), created by Welles when he was only 25. In the years following "Citizen Kane", Welles' career
continued to change as he made film after film (some never finished, many dismissed) and acted in other
projects often to earn money in order to keep making his own films. "Magician" features scenes from almost
every existing Welles film, from "Hearts of Age", (which he made in a day when he was only 18 years old) to
rarely-seen clips from his final unfinished works like "The Deep" and "Don Quixote", as well as his television and

Possibly the most shocking and emotionally staggering film ever shown by our festival. At the end of World War
II, Britain and the U.S. had teams of photographers capturing the liberation of the concentration camps. Even
Alfred Hitchcock traveled to Europe to work with photographer Sidney Bernstein, but after a frustrating month,
returned home. Although the footage was used at the Nuremburg war trials, it was subsequently buried by the
Allies and remained secreted away for 70 years. Now, re-mastered into an astounding film, "Night Will Fall" is a
devastating visual reminder of the horrors of the camps and the politics which still surrounds the history of the
Nazi era.

camps have not been edited out and are extremely disturbing

Based on the novel by Luis Sepulveda, "The Old Man Who Read Love Stories" stars Richard Dreyfuss as
Antonio Bolivar, an elderly man who lives in a small village along the Amazon River. Many years ago, Boliver and
his young wife came to the village as part of an effort to colonize the area. The couple was welcomed by Nushino
(Victor Bottenbley), leader of the native tribes, but after a fever took the life of his spouse and attacks by fortune
seekers caused the natives to turn their backs on the white settlers, Bolivar has been virtually alone, with only
one close friend in the village, an aging dentist named Rubicondo (Hugo Weaving).
Bolivar passes his time by reading florid romance novels passed along to him by Josefina (Cathy Tyson),
Rubicondo's mistress who works as an aide for the village's mayor, Luis Agalla (Timothy Spall). Agalla, not an
especially scrupulous man, has been selling illegal hunting permits to visitors hunting big game, and one of his
customers made the mistake of killing and skinning a pack of jaguar cubs; the mother of the cats found the
hunter, and tore him to shreds. Now likely to attack any human she sees, the mother jaguar is roaming the jungle
near the village and must be found before she can kill again, and Bolivar steps forward to help with the
dangerous assignment of finding and capturing the vicious cat.

The Overnighters

Desperate, broken men chase their dreams and run from their demons in the North Dakota oil fields. A local
Pastor risks everything to help them — risking his own position.
In the tiny town of Williston, North Dakota, tens of thousands of unemployed hopefuls show up with dreams of
honest work and a big paycheck under the lure of the oil boom. However, busloads of newcomers chasing a
broken American Dream step into the stark reality of slim work prospects and nowhere to sleep. The town lacks
the infrastructure to house the overflow of migrants, even for those who do find gainful employment.
Over at Concordia Lutheran Church, Pastor Jay Reinke is driven to deliver the migrants some dignity. Night after
night, he converts his church into a makeshift dorm and counseling center, opening the church’s doors to allow
the “Overnighters” (as he calls them) to stay for a night, a week or longer. They sleep on the floor, in the pews
and in their cars in the church parking lot. Many who take shelter with Reinke are living on society’s fringes and
with checkered pasts, and their presence starts affecting the dynamics of the small community. The congregants
begin slinging criticism and the City Council threatens to shut the controversial Overnighters program down,
forcing the pastor to make a decision which leads to profound consequences that he never imagined.

around the globe. Along her journey into the world of patents she meets British inventor James Dyson and
American business gurus in the Silicon Valley. She discovers the war strategies that patent attorneys apply and
hears Lisbeth Ceriani’s shocking story of her body’s gene that she doesn’t own. In Geneva, Hannah visits the
World Intellectual Property Organization and travels to India, the world’s largest manufacturer of generic,
meaning patent-free, medicines. She learns what India has come up with to protect its genetic resources and
meets Anil Gupta, the “Gandhi of Innovation”. Are patents the only way to inspire innovation? At the end of her

If you are a student on a Christian College campus you were probably raised in an evangelical, Christian home.
You went to church regularly and were told that being gay (or lesbian, bisexual, transgender) was a sin and that
you were going to hell. You were told this over and over by your parents, Sunday school teachers, youth leaders
and pastors. If you arrive on campus and are struggling with your sexuality you will think that you are going to
hell, that being gay is the worst sin and that, if anyone finds out, you will be expelled. This scenario has deep
roots in the evangelical history of the United States where Bible-based homophobia is normative and
discrimination by churches and Christian Colleges is accepted. "Queers in the Kingdom: Let Your Light Shine"
tracks both the evangelical history of this nation and the emergence of OneWheaton — a group of LGBTQ
alumni and allies from Wheaton College (Billy Graham's Alma Mater). OneWheaton resists the silencing and
shame that has lead to a suicide on campus. They take action to support current students and each other as
many connect to their backgrounds and college experience for the first time.

Disturbed by the new American wars, writer and Vietnam veteran Christopher Upham reconnects with the 299th
Engineers, where he was an ambulance driver. Upham's long-lost comrades tell him an unsettling truth — they
had thought that he was dead — killed in the 1969 Dak To siege in Vietnam's Central Highlands. Upham and four
other 299th Combat Engineers journeyed back to Vietnam where they confront ghosts, former enemies and the
long term legacies of the Vietnam war.
Using rare archival film footage and still photographs the film recreates a Vietnam, which has loomed so large in
their minds and lives for so long. The film examines soldiers expectations of war and service, contrasted with the
realities of living in the war's aftermath. Questions raised by "Return to Dak To" — about the role of soldiers and
the long-term personal effects of war — take on a heightened poignancy in this current climate.

Look inside the homes and lives of small-town, rural America, where isolated kids confront heart-breaking
choices, marginalized parents struggle to survive, and, despite it all, families cling to the promise of equal

Rich Hill, Missouri (population 1393). Off the highway, next to the railroad track. Andrew, 14, works on his bike,
talks dreams with his dad, practices dance moves with his twin sister. He’s just like a lot of American teenagers,
except that his days are often also about survival. Harley, 15, lives with his grandma and eight other members of
his extended family because his mom is in prison for attempted murder. Still, Harley is the first guy in the room to
crack a joke and make you laugh when you least expect it. Appachey, 13, finds solace in skateboards and,
despite his intelligence, has had to repeat the 6th grade, which doesn’t come close to fixing what’s broken in his
life.
These boys can be tough — they know how to walk with a clenched-jaw stare like they have nothing to lose. But
when you get to know them up-close, you see their insight, their humor, and their determination to survive. And
despite the isolation and brutality of their circumstances, their hope for a brighter future persists. They imagine
that their hard work will be rewarded, and that, although there is no road map or role model, even they can live
the American dream.

Rebecca Gomperts, horrified by the realities created by anti-abortion law around the world, felt compelled to
challenge this. Her method: to provide abortions on a ship in offshore waters.
Her project, Women on Waves, begins as flawed spectacle, a media frenzy, faced with governmental, religious,
and military blockades. But with each setback comes a more refined mission, until Rebecca has the revelation
that she can use new technologies to bypass law — and train women to give themselves safe abortions using
WHO-sanctioned protocols with pills.
We witness the creation of an underground network of emboldened, informed activists, working at the cutting
edge of global reproductive rights, who trust women to handle abortion themselves. "Vessel" is Rebecca’s story:
