I began working at SCT as an actor in 1985, soon after moving
to Seattle. We were at the Woodland Park Zoo then, in a much
smaller space, but it held just as much magic. Thirty-two years
later, I am still so grateful to be at SCT (next to the Space
Needle now), grateful to have found a place with people
of such idealism, kindness and empathy, energy and skill.
I am grateful to all of our wonderful teaching artists, to the
outstanding education staff and, of course, to all of the young
people and families who have, like me, found in SCT a place
to love, learn and grow.

DRAMA
AGE 3½ - GRADE 3
STORY DRAMA
Ages 3½-4½
Great children’s books serve as launching pads for
dramatic adventures. In Story Drama, we go beyond
reenactment to create new characters and dramatic
situations in which we work together to overcome all
sorts of dramatic challenges. Along the way, we use
theatrical elements including costumes, music, art, and
props to engage all of our senses. SCT teaching artists
collaborate to develop a detailed curriculum for every
book that we select for Story Drama.
FAMILY STORY DRAMA AT
SEATTLE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM
Ages 3½-4½
This special section of Story Drama takes place at
our next-door-neighbor, Seattle Children’s Museum,
before the exhibits are open to the public. A parent
or guardian will accompany each child as we read the
book in the beautiful, castle-like Storytelling Circle
and use some of the great props and settings in the
museum during our dramatic adventures. This is a
chance not only to have great adventures, but for
families to learn more about story drama together.
MAGIC DOORWAY
TREASURE TRUNK THEATRE
Half-Day Program
Ages 4-5
Our treasure trunk provides a dramatic focus for each
class, concealing something mysterious and exciting.
We open the trunk to discover the spark that inspires
that day’s interactive adventure. The adventures build
into a week-long story that we create as we act it out.
Students learn how to band together as an ensemble
and use their voices, bodies and imaginations to
overcome a myriad of dramatic challenges.
Half-Day Program
Ages 4-5
Full-Day Program
Grades 1-2, 2-3
Clues to solving a mystery await us on the other side
of the door. Each day we work together and discover
new ways of using our voices, bodies and minds. Then
we step through the doorway to explore a fantastical
place where we collect clues provided by colorful and
mysterious characters that we create. At the end of
each class, we cross back through the doorway, piece
together our clues and take one more step toward
solving our week-long mystery.
We provide the flexible framework for a week-long
adventure. Each morning, the class creates characters
and a detailed dramatic environment for the story
we develop and act out. In the afternoon, a specialist
works on specific skills to support that ongoing story.
THEATRE ARTS SPLASH
Half-Day Program
Ages 4-8
Students in Theatre Arts Splash rotate between three
different classes every day, each with its own instructor.
In Creative Drama, we create and act out a story that
continues throughout the week, reaching a dramatic
conclusion on the last day of class. In Movement,
students develop both individual and ensemble motor
skills. In Visual Art, they create their own works of art
using a variety of media.
We divide all sessions into three age-appropriate
groups. Each group of students has a counselor who
guides them through the day.
We have four Drama Quest themes to choose from:
DRAGON TRAINERS: Fly to great heights on our quest
to befriend these fiery creatures of the sky. We become
an elite troupe of skilled trainers determined to change
the reputation of our fierce friends. A puppet specialist
helps us bring our dragons to life.
TREASURE HUNTERS: Span the globe in our actionpacked search for ancient riches and buried treasures.
Our adventures lead us on wild scavenger hunts
beyond the walls of our classroom. Along the way we
create maps and discover clues in our race for the
prize. A specialist in the visual arts helps us enhance
our quest.
FORGOTTEN FAIRY TALES: Escape into a world of
mischief and magic. Band together to save beloved
stories and characters from fading from memory
forever. Each day a classic fairy tale inspires us as we
create our own epic enchanted story. A storytelling
specialist helps us delve deeper into the twists and
turns of great tales.
All three Theatre Arts Splash classes—Creative Drama,
Movement and Visual Art—focus on a common theme
throughout the week and on a different aspect of that
theme each day. This summer’s Splash themes are:
CIRCUS SLEUTHS: Come one! Come all! The circus
needs our team of sneaky sleuths to uncover the
hidden mysteries that await us under the big top.
A movement specialist helps us create the many
characters that fill our zany adventure.
RAINFOREST: The lush environment of the rainforest
serves as the backdrop for our creative adventures. We
use our bodies, voices and imaginations to meet and
become many creatures as we explore the forest.
EXTENDED CARE
OPPOSITES: Each day a different set of opposites
helps us discover how contrasting concepts provide a
fun framework to explore using our bodies, voices and
imaginations.
3
DRAMA QUEST
We offer morning and afternoon extended care.
See page 29 for more information.
If you see this symbol next to your class, you will
receive a 2017 SCT Drama School T-shirt to wear
during class. At the end of the week, this T-shirt will
be yours to keep.

ACTING
Actors who have had training and experience may audition
to be placed in higher level classes. See pages 15-20 for
our schedule of classes, and pages 25-26 for audition
information.
GRADES 3-12
GRADES 3-12
ACTING
ACTING 2
SCT Drama School’s Acting teaches fundamentals
that every actor needs. Theatre games and exercises
will stretch your voice, body and mind. Open scenes
and improvisation enable you to embody a character,
identify obstacles and work to achieve an objective
through a variety of tactics. Acting focuses on key
physical, vocal and improvisational skills.
In Acting 2, we combine Acting skills with script work
to create exciting characters and engaging scenes.
We will focus on group scenes and monologues while
discovering the clues in scripts that help you find the
objectives of the characters, the tactics they use and
obstacles they overcome. Each student will rehearse,
memorize and present at least one scene to share on
the last day of class.
Students must have taken two sessions of Acting or
pass an audition before moving on to Acting 2.
Students must have taken two sessions of Acting or
pass an audition to take Acting 2.

Grades 3-5, 4-6, 6-10, 7-12
Full-Day Program
Grades 4-6, 7-12
ACTING CAMP
ACTING 3
In addition to our Acting curriculum, Acting Camps
also feature an Improvisation, Physical Comedy or
Shakespeare class.
In Acting 3, you will tackle three essential aspects
of dramatic performance: the monologue, period
material and verse. Monologues require the actor to
create theatre without scene partners, using the voice
and body to respond to circumstances that exist only
in the imagination. Period scenes require actors to
learn new vocabulary and to breathe life into eras and
styles different from our own. Acting in verse requires
advanced vocal technique and helps the actor develop
an ear for finding the sense of a scene from the sound
of its words. Each student will rehearse and memorize
verse material, period material and at least one
monologue to share with family and friends on the last
day of class.
Full-Day Program
Grades 3-5, 4-6
Pairing options: You can pair any
half-day elective with an Acting class to create
a full-day program. We provide free supervision
during the break.
ELECTIVES
Full-Day Program
Grades 7-12
ACTING FOR
THE CAMERA
Half-Day Program
Grades 4-6, 7-12
Acting in front of a camera requires special techniques.
Learn how to relate to a camera as though you are
facing your goal, your enemy or a distant horizon.
Learn how to act out of sequence, to act one line at a
time, to maintain concentration amid the distractions
of a film set and to stay within the tight movement
parameters that acting for a camera often requires.
We help you achieve the honesty and relaxation that
produces the best on-camera acting.
CREATING CHARACTER
Half-Day Program
Grades 6-10
In this class you create dramatic characters. You
explore the world the character lives in, as well as that
character’s inner life, thoughts, feelings, hopes and
fears. You also learn how to translate this work into
how the character speaks, moves, and relates to the
world and others. Each student works with a variety of
characters taken from life and plays.
SHAKESPEARE
Half-Day Program
Grades 3-5, 4-6, 6-10, 7-12
Shakespeare presents challenges to both beginning
and experienced actors; he is also a great acting
teacher. He wrote not to be read, but to be spoken
and heard. In this class we work towards actively
embodying his words with movement and voice. This
training stretches us as actors and leads to a deeper
understanding of all drama.
Students must have taken two sessions of Acting 2 or
pass an audition to take Acting 3.

COMEDY TROUPE
Full-Day Program
Grades 3-5
Half-Day Program
Grades 3-5, 4-6, 6-10, 7-12
We build stories without scripts or rehearsal, creating
them at the same time that we act them out, using
a wide variety of improv games and formats. We
learn how to say “yes, and …!” to the offers we get
from fellow performers in order to build scenes that
CROWW—that is, they contain distinct Characters,
specific Relationships and maintain strong Objectives
within a well-defined Where and When. We go on to
create more complex stories that include stronger
conflicts and a clear beginning, middle and end.
If you have experience in physical comedy and want
to learn how to tie your skills more deeply to character
and dramatic action, join Comedy Troupe. Learn
tumbling and juggling skills and new slips, slaps, falls
and rolls. We will develop both solo and group comedy
routines and scenes where characters that you create
are placed in bizarre settings and struggle against
impossible obstacles in hilarious ways.
A choreographer and musical director will introduce you to
essential dancing, singing and acting skills while you rehearse
and perform at least two ensemble numbers from the musicals
listed below. In each session of Musical Theatre we learn how to
use dance and well-crafted songs to develop strong characters
and engaging scenes.
Half-Day Program
Grades 3-5, 4-6, 7-12
PHYSICAL COMEDY
Half-Day Program
Grades 3-5, 6-10
Combine precise physical movement with the acting
skills necessary to bring those moves to comedic life.
In Physical Comedy you learn a wide variety of different
takes, lazzi and pratfalls. You also learn how to control,
isolate and exaggerate physical and facial reactions
and how to incorporate those skills into comic
characters, bits, routines and scenes.
SKETCH COMEDY
Full-Day Program
Grades 5-8
Come join our sketch comedy group for the week
and create brand new sketches and comic routines
to perform on the last day of class for friends and
family. We will explore a range of classic sketches from

YOUNG ACTOR INSTITUTE
Hosted by the University of Washington
Grade 10-Age 21
Over many years, YAI has found a vital place in the
Seattle theatre community, training not only future
professionals but many of the leading lights of Seattle’s
increasingly active and powerful young-adult theatre
scene. Most important, YAI continues to provide
dynamic and challenging training that meets the needs
of young actors seeking deep experiences with the art
form. This is training that nourishes the artist and the
community. The faculty of YAI continues to develop
ways of engaging the students with diverse and
cutting-edge material as well as building foundations in
classical traditions.
YAI’s focus on advanced movement techniques and
powerful classic and contemporary texts stretches the
imagination and connects the students beyond each
year’s class to a community of the best and brightest
young theatre artists.
We provide a comprehensive program of intensive
classes in a wide variety of theatre performing arts. YAI
students train in theatre for six weeks, five days a week,
eight hours a day. YAI culminates in a training showcase
when we invite friends and family into the studios
to observe scene work, movement exercises, dance
choreography, singing, stage combat and improv.
“If you want to learn and grow as an
actor, DO IT! It’s a lot of work, but
it’s all worth it because it will change
your life. It is an amazing opportunity
and booking that audition could end
up being one of the best choices you
make.”
– Lindsay Carter, ’16 YAI Graduate
“One of the most incredible life
experiences I have ever had. The best
six weeks of my life”
- Kat Rodriguez, ’16 YAI Graduate
“YAI empowers young people to
create art with intention. At the
end of the summer you leave with
confidence, support and mentorship.”
– Megan Ruppel, ‘16 YAI Graduate

MARIO AND THE COMET
A NEW MUSICAL
Book and Lyrics by Gabriel Jason Dean
Music and Lyrics by David Dabbon
Directed by SCT’s Artistic Director Courtney Sale
The Venedicci Comet is headed straight toward Earth.
Apocalyptics predict that it will strike, causing total
annihilation; while most scientists speculate it will be a
near-miss and Earthlings will behold history’s most aweinspiring celestial event. Either way, Mario is prepared.
With a chorus of rubber ducks and soaring songs about
the theory of relativity, Mario and the Comet is a musical
adventure-comedy about how loss can be like an earthshattering comet; but when faced together as a family,
it can become a thing of beauty and a celebration of life
and love.
THE TEMPEST
By William Shakespeare
Adapted by Don Fleming
Directed by Keni Cohen
A magical storm and a shipwreck on a mysterious
island lead us into the story of Prospero the sorcerer, his
daughter Miranda, Caliban the monster, Ariel the spirit
and the noble castaways who struggle against Prospero’s
magic. A great story that features some of Shakespeare’s
most compelling characters and beautiful language.
TWELFTH NIGHT,
OR WHAT YOU WILL
By William Shakespeare
Adapted by Don Fleming
Directed by Don Fleming
Another shipwreck separates Viola from her identical
twin brother Sebastian and leads us into a crazy comedy
that is also a deeply moving story of madness and
love lost and found. Twelfth Night has a host of great
characters, including the wise fool Feste, the brilliant and
resourceful Viola, the beautiful and proud Olivia and the
comic zanies Maria, Malvolio, Toby Belch, and Sir Andrew
Aguecheek. Like The Tempest, Twelfth Night is one of
Shakespeare’s greatest plays, featuring a great story,
great characters and beautiful verse.
MADAGASCAR –
A MUSICAL ADVENTURE JR.
Book by Kevin Del Aguila
Music and Lyrics by George Noriega and Joel Someillan
Directed by Hattie Andres
Join Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe,
Gloria the Hippo and, of course, those hilarious, plotting
penguins as they bound onto our stage. Based on
the smash DreamWorks animated motion picture,
Madagascar – A Musical Adventure follows all of your
favorite crack-a-lackin’ friends as they escape from their
home in New York’s Central Park Zoo and find themselves
on an unexpected journey to the madcap world of King
Julien’s Madagascar.
RAGTIME
DEAR STUDENT ACTORS AND FAMILIES,
I am so grateful to SCT’s Artistic Director Courtney Sale, not only for working with me to select these shows, but also
for agreeing to direct one herself. She will be taking on the moving new musical Mario and the Comet, and I am
so pleased that some of our Drama School students will have the chance to work with such a generous spirit and
extraordinary talent. I really love every script in this lineup. I think they provide amazing opportunities and challenges
for young actors, and I cannot wait to see you all at auditions – we are going to create some great theatre together!

SCHOOL EDITION
Music by Stephen Flaherty
Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens
Book by Terrence McNally
Directed by Matt Giles
At the dawn of a new century, everything is changing
and anything is possible. Ragtime weaves together the
stories of a daring young African-American musician,
a stifled upper-class wife, and a determined Jewish
immigrant, all united by their courage, compassion and
belief in the promise of the future. Together they confront
the conflicts between wealth and poverty, freedom and
prejudice, hope and despair, as they discover what it
means to live in America.

do set aside time on the last day of most programs
for students to share some of what they have learned
in the class and demonstrate the process of theatre
education. We invite friends and family to attend.

space for 12 students in each of these sections:
CAST 1
For ages 4-5, meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from
10:00am-12:30pm. Several times each semester, we
visit an exciting part of SCT: dropping in on rehearsals,
going backstage, and visiting the costume, scene and
prop shops. Then we re-create what we’ve seen through
creative drama adventures in our classroom. We also
attend all age-appropriate SCT Professional Productions,
as part of our class experience. Tuition for Fall or Winter is
$600. Tuition for Spring is $450.
CAST 2
For ages 5½ -7, meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from
10:00am-2:00pm. We investigate how SCT Professional
Productions develop from design and rehearsal into
performance. We attend performances of all ageappropriate SCT Professional Productions and actively
explore their themes through drama games and exercises,
as well as discussion and active learning opportunities.
Observing the process of developing and performing
professional plays at SCT also inspires our own art and
science projects. Tuition for Fall or Winter is $785. Tuition
for Spring is $585.
ACTING FOR HOMESCHOOL STUDENTS
For ages 8-12, runs concurrently with CAST, and meets
Tuesdays from 10:00am to 12:30pm. In addition to
learning acting skills, you get a chance to look behind
the scenes at our professional theatre and see the SCT
Professional Productions. Tuition for Fall or Winter is $285.
Tuition for Spring is $215.
HOMESCHOOL PERFORMANCE PROJECT
For ages 8-14, also runs concurrently with CAST, on
Thursdays from 10:00am to 12:30pm. We will advance
our acting skills by learning to tell a complete story, using
one great script each session. Tuition for Fall or Winter is
$285. Tuition for Spring is $215.
Extended Care is available for CAST 1 and
Homeschool from 12:30–2:00pm on Tuesdays and
Thursdays for $12 a day.
