Musculoskeletal system Definition The skeletal system provides support and shape. The major organs are bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. Bone provides support and protection, stores minerals, and forms blood cells in marrow. Cartilage is a flexible, connective tissue that is made up of mostly water. Tendons are tough bands of fibrous connective tissue that usually connect muscle to bone. Ligaments are a sheet or band of tough, fibrous tissue connecting bones or cartilages at a joint or supporting an organ. Role of molecular imaging Molecular imaging radiopharmaceuticals such as technetium-99m medronate, technetium-99m oxidronate or florine-18 sodium fluoride can be useful in the skeletal system by imaging the bones to help delineate areas of altered osteogenesis.
