Rainforests Rainforest Animals at Marwell Zoo. The following sheets contain large images of some of the rainforest animals that can be seen on a visit to Marwell Zoo. The children can find and identify the different species and then think about which layer of the rainforest the animal is from. There is a ‘layers of the forest’ picture to aid with this. Each animal picture is accompanied by additional information on the reverse of the image when printed double sided. Okapi Which layer? Forest floor Okapi come from the rainforests of central Africa. They are closely related to giraffes. Okapi eat leaves, grasses, fruits and fungi. Western black and white colobus monkey Which layer? Canopy Western black and white colobus monkeys come from western Africa. Western black and white colobus monkeys mainly eat leaves but will also eat fruit, flowers and woody twigs. Ring-tailed coati Which layer? Forest floor + Understorey + Canopy Ring-tailed coatis come from South America. The coati is an omnivore and eats a variety of fruit and invertebrates, including insects, spiders, scorpions, crabs, centipedes and millipedes. They eat tarantulas after rolling them around to remove their irritating hairs. Black and white ruffed lemur Which layer? Canopy Black and white ruffed lemurs come from Madagascar. Black and white ruffed lemurs eat fruit, seeds, leaves and nectar. Ocelot Which layer? Forest floor + Understorey + Canopy Ocelots come from South and Central America. Ocelots are good swimmers and climbers. Most hunting and travelling takes place on the ground but they often rest up in the trees. They eat a variety of small mammals, birds and reptiles (including iguanas, tortoises and snakes), as well as fish and also land crabs. Larger prey, such as armadillos, monkeys and deer are also an important part of the ocelot diet. Pygmy hippo Which layer? Forest floor Pygmy hippopotamus come from Africa. The pygmy hippo spends the day in water, and comes out at night to feed on fruits, leaves, roots and grasses. Siamang gibbon Which layer? Canopy + Emergent Siamang gibbons come from Malaysia and Sumatra. Siamang gibbons eat fruit and leaves, and sometimes insects and flowers. Up to half of the siamang’s diet consists of fruit, with figs being especially important.
