DERMAGENIST™
Revitalizes the skin’s beauty potential
The beauty potential of our skin is locked deep within our cells, in their
genetic makeup. Fibroblasts are responsible for synthesizing vital components of the dermis, and are therefore essential contributors to the
youthful appearance of our skin.
DERMAGENIST™ furthermore increases pro-collagen synthesis and stimulates key proteins that play an important role in the functionalization of connective tissue. Extracellular spaces are refilled with a functional, three-dimensional collagen network (see Fig. 3).
Our lifestyles can change this potential and accelerate the aging process through an epigenetic mechanism. While the fibroblasts’ genetic
code does not directly change under negative environmental influences, certain parts of their DNA are shut down when a specific enzyme is activated (DNMT3a). As a result, several gene sequences in
the fibroblasts are no longer read out, protein production is halted, and
skin cell vitality declines.
With the discovery of DERMAGENIST™, a way has been found to protect
skin against this undesired epigenetic gene silencing, by inhibiting DNMT3a enzyme activity (see Fig. 1). The result is a reactivation of LOXL
genes (see Fig. 2). The LOXL enzyme plays an important role in the functionalization of connective tissue fibres.

Another important way in which DERMAGENIST™ improves skin elasticity is by stimulating the synthesis of actin, a key structural protein that
reinforces the cytoskeleton of fibroblasts. The cells are revitalized and
become more contractile.
Two clinical trials have been performed. Twice daily over a period of 56
days, 30 women aged between 40 and 65 treated one half of the face
with 0.4% DERMAGENIST™ and the other half of the face with a placebo
formulation. The skin density was determined using high-resolution
ultrasonic measurement. An 18% increase in skin density in the
cheek area was observed after 56 days. Furthermore, skin firmness was
determined by a score system. There was an observed improvement in
skin firmness of 10% after 56 days and 15% after 84 days.
DERMAGENIST™ is extracted from marjoram leaves. A special method
ensures the active ingredient is rich in polyphenols, vicenin and luteolin7-0-glucuronide.
DERMAGENIST TM:
• Protects against epigenetic modification of DNA; reduces gene
silencing
• Reactivates the gene expression of extracellular matrix components
• Vitalizes fibroblasts
• Improves the neo-collagen network
Skin care applications:
• Anti-aging
• “Epi-protector”
• “Cell tonic” technology
• Tightness
• Improved skin density

RELIPIDIUM™
Rebalances the skin microflora
RELIPIDIUM™ restores balance to the skin’s microflora. RELIPIDIUM™ is a
modified yeast extract that boosts lipid metabolism and strengthens
the natural skin barrier. RELIPIDIUM™ stimulates the production of
sphingolipids, ceramides and cholesterol sulphate. A volunteer trial confirmed a moisturizing effect and strengthening of the skin barrier (TEWL
measurement).
A second volunteer study showed that RELIPIDIUM™ restores the balance between Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus. Dry skin is characterized by an elevated population of S. aureus.

RELIPIDIUM™ is able to balance out the ratio of pathogenic germs. It
does so by activating the TLR-2 and dectin-1a receptors in the skin. These keratinocyte receptors recognize foreign organisms and activate the
immune system. RELIPIDIUM™ increases the production of TLR-2 and
dectin-1a.
OLIGOLIN™
The multifunctional rejuvenation cure
As we age, our skin and the dermoepidermal junction (DEJ) become
thinner, and our skin density declines. The skin gradually loses its firmness and dries out. What is needed is a multifunctional care solution.
With the development of OLIGOLIN™, our partner BASF in cooperation
with the University of Reims has succeeded in translating the beneficial properties of linseed, known for so long already in traditional and
Ayurvedic medicine, to skin.
OLIGOLIN™ is a hydrolyzed extract of linseed that contains a high concentration of oligosaccharides. OLIGOLIN™ restructures the epidermis, the dermoepidermal junction and the dermis, making it a truly
multifunctional active. The thickness of the epidermis is significantly
increased, and the formation of involucrin and filaggrin stimulated.
By improving type IV collagen formation, the dermoepidermal zone
is restructured. Regeneration of the dermis is achieved by improving
fibroblast proliferation and migration. Stimulation of collagen-I, collagen-II and GAG synthesis and lumican expression has been demonstrated in vitro. Enzymes that attack the basic dermal substance
are inhibited, for example hyaluronidase and heparanase.
The oligosaccharides from OLIGOLIN™ positively influence the tissue
structure of the skin, and counteract the natural aging process. The
epidermis thickens, the tonicity of the DEJ strengthens and the dermis
becomes denser.
A placebo-controlled trial was conducted in which 26 volunteers with
dry skin applied 1% OLIGOLIN™ over a period of 28 days. An 11%
increase in skin moisture was observed (see Fig. 4).

NEUROCOSMETICS
Revolutionizing cosmetics
GIVAUDAN presents three effective actives from its neurocosmetics
concept that positively affect the skin feel and skin balance:
• MARILIANCE lowers the skin’s irritation threshold by inhibiting the
formation of pain receptors
• ÔCALINE XP effectively inhibits histamine release and thus soothes
the skin
• NEUROPHROLINETM reduces cortisol production and counteracts
skin stress
MARILIANCE – neurocutaneous balance
The natural high-tech active MARILIANCE (Water, Propanediol, Rhodosorus Marinus Extract) is obtained from the alga Rhodosorus marinus.
This red microalga originates in the warm waters of the French Antilles. New research results at universities show that there is a correlation
between longevity and reduced expression of pain receptors. Could this
newly discovered correlation be the new key to youth?
MARILIANCE inhibits the formation of the pain receptor TRPV1 in vitro
under inflammatory stress conditions. In a placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 46 volunteers with reactive skin, a significant reduction of
cutaneous sensitivity was already achieved after 14 days (stinging test
with capsaicin).
ÔCALINE XP – suitable for sensitive skin
A complex of actives from pumpkinseed extract in combination with
a marine active water (Maris Aqua, Aqua, Cucurbita Pepo Seed Extract,
Benzyl Alcohol, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid), ÔCALINE XP inhibits histamine release triggered by substance P.
In two clinical trials, a reduction of erythema formation and roughness
was demonstrated already 60 minutes after applying ÔCALINE XP, and a
42% reduction of skin reactivity after 2 weeks.

Neurocosmetics represents the second generation of “wellbeing” cosmetics, which are strikingly different from classical care concepts for sensitive skin. Active ingredient research for sensitive skin is concentrating
increasingly on studying complex neurocutaneous relationships. It is
known that not only neurons but also skin cells are capable of synthesizing and excreting neurotransmitters and expressing the corresponding receptors. The release of these messengers – many of which are
neuropeptides – is triggered by physical, chemical or even emotional
stimuli, and has a considerable influence on how our skin feels.

Rich complex for skin regeneration
The active ingredient POLY HELIXAN PF is obtained from the harvested secretion of the Burgundy snail. Over its 600 million years of
existence, this European snail species has demonstrated a remarkable
adaptability to perpetually changing environmental factors. One of the
reasons for this snail’s resilience resides in the secretion it produces.
This secretion both protects the snail’s body from external influences
and promotes the healing of wounds.
The active ingredient POLY HELIXAN PF is a rich complex of different
active agents for skin regeneration.
Composition of POLY HELIXAN PF:
• Mucopolysaccharides: moisturizing effect
• Proteolytic enzymes: support the protease/anti-protease balance
• Collagen and elastin: components of connective tissue
• vitamins A, C and E: stimulate collagen synthesis and skin regeneration
• Allantoin: stimulates skin regeneration and has regenerative and
anti-inflammatory effects

The effectiveness POLY HELIXAN PF was studied in an in-vivo trial with
15 volunteers aged 13 to 55, who all had scars. A cosmetic formulation
containing 5% POLY HELIXAN PF was applied twice daily in the scar
area.
After 30 days of application, the results were evaluated in comparison
to the initial situation. Skin elasticity was measured by Cutometer and
skin moisture content was measured by Corneometer. The scars were
assessed by video microscopy. Analysis revealed that skin elasticity
had increased by 32% and skin moisture had increased by 17%.
Furthermore, a visible improvement of the scars was observed after
30 days of treatment (see Fig. 8).
IBR-SNOWFLAKE®
An extract of summer snowflake for hot days
The extract IBR-SNOWFLAKE® is obtained from the dormant bulb of
the summer snowflake. The active components contained are socalled dormins, which are inhibitors of cell proliferation. New studies
show that, in addition to its known wrinkle-smoothing effect, IBRSNOWFLAKE® is able to lower perspiration, and thus has an antiperspirant effect. IBR-SNOWFLAKE® also reduces spontaneous muscle
contraction. IBR-SNOWFLAKE® was therefore tested in these applications as a direct comparison with Botox® in treating excessive sweating
(hyperhidrosis).
The in-vivo double-blind study involved 24 female volunteers with
heavy perspiration in the armpit area. Initially, evaporation was measured in both armpits. 1% IBR-SNOWFLAKE® in a cream formulation was
then applied twice daily to the armpit area over a period of one week.
Cotton balls were inserted for a standardized time in the armpit and
weighed before and after insertion into the armpit in order to determi-
ne the amount of sweat produced. This measurement was performed
under standardized sweat-inducing conditions (temperature and humidity). Under these test conditions, a significant 36% reduction of
perspiration after applying 1% IBR-SNOWFLAKE® was demonstrated
versus the initial state.

Versatile emollient
IPD – a product of our new partner KURARAY – is an innovative multitalent for use in personal care applications. This water-soluble solvent improves the sensory profile of finished products and creates a smooth,
non-sticky feel. The product is capable of solubilizing even troublesome actives such as glycyrrhetinic acid or Boswellia serrata extract, and
allows the use of hydrophilic substances in water-free and lipophilic
substances in water-based systems. Adding IPD to perfume oils allows
the alcohol content to be significantly reduced, and allows the development of milder perfume or body sprays that stand out for a good
feel.
When IPD is worked into the water phase of an O/W emulsion, a more
even distribution and reduction of droplet sizes is observed, which positively affects the stabilizing properties of an O/W emulsion.
IPD has good wetting properties, as proven in tests with silica, iron pigments and mineral UV filters such as titanium dioxide.
5% IPD worked into a compact powder formulation significantly improves elasticity, application characteristics and breakage resistance, while lipstick formulations can be optimized in terms of pay-off
and shine effect with 2.5–3%.
Combination with sorbitol creates synergistic effects to reveal both
moisturizing properties and a repairing action in tests on damaged hair.

Anti-aging from the Breton coast
The seaweed off the coast of Brittany is exposed to strong ocean currents, frequent storms and the rough waves to come with it. In the
course of their evolution, however, these plants have adapted perfectly
to these extreme climatic conditions.
A source of their resistance is the fucoidans incorporated into the cell
walls. These give the plants additional sturdiness, allowing the seaweed
to maintain its integrity even in rough conditions.
The company Lessonia has isolated the key molecule of fucoidans, called
fucose, and offers this as an active ingredient. Given the very low molecular weight of the active, FUCOREVERSETM can penetrate rapidly into the
skin.
In an in-vitro test, it was proven that the active ingredient stimulates
collagen-I synthesis and fibroblast proliferation. To test this, a 0.15% solution of FUCOREVERSETM was added to the culture medium. Compared
to the placebo control, collagen-I synthesis increased by 23.7%, and
fibroblast proliferation by 35.5% (see Fig. 11).
The anti-wrinkle effect was studied in a subsequent clinical trial. The
trail was carried out with 42 women of Caucasian skin type over a period of 28 days. The volunteers applied a formulation containing 1.5 %
FUCOREVERSE TM and a placebo formulation for comparison in the area
around the eyes. For better comparability, the trial was conducted as
a half-face test.
After the duration of the trial, a significant 9.1% reduction in crow’s
feet depth was observed versus the placebo formulation.
The measurements were taken by non-contact 3D measurement (LIFEVIZ Micro method), (see Fig. 12).

Dermatological skin care with biologically active, natural microsilver
Originally developed for technical applications, MICROSILVER BG™ is the
culmination of 15 of research at the Fraunhofer Institute. The patented
manufacturing process uses exclusively pure metallic silver, from which
MICROSILVER BG™ is produced with its special sponge-like surface
structure. This structure creates a giant surface area that allows ample
release of silver ions over a prolonged period (depot effect).
MICROSILVER BG™ has a very diverse range of applications, due to its
broad spectrum of action. The active destroys germs and microorganisms on the skin surface. The skin’s appearance is rapidly restored and normalized. MICROSILVER BG™ supports the skin’s natural
healing process, soothes sore and irritated skin and destroys odourforming bacteria.
Due to its size, MICROSILVER BG™ does not penetrate into the epidermis, rather it deposits mainly in the wrinkles of the skin.

K-Beauty inspirations
In recent years, there has been a growing presence of South Korea in
the beauty industry. Ever since the most popular beauty product from
South Korea – BB cream – captured the European market, many innovative formulation concepts have evolved into a megatrend. The often
lovingly and playfully presented cosmetic products include innovative
creams, serums, cleansing milks, and highly innovative deco products.
Formulation Sunjin: Milk Drop BB cream with WaterDropSil-D
SJF-1609_Milk drop BB cream_ver1.0
Phase
A
The range is very different from products originating from Europe and
the USA. The selection is simply huge. The ingredients are unique.
The textures are highly innovative. The packaging is eccentric and
highly diversified. It is little wonder when one considers how much
South Koreans will invest in a groomed appearance. 50% of the total
turnover in the beauty market is generated through skin care products.
Right in line with the K-Beauty and Skin Food trends, we present the
Chef’s Selection of our Korean partner SUNJIN.
These textures are based on the silicone emulsifier WATERDROPSIL-D,
which produces W/Si emulsions. The water of the emulsion is enclosed
and stabilized inside macromicelles. When applied on skin, the emulsion breaks up into little water drops. The formulation thus feels light
and fresh when applied. Within a few seconds, tiny water drops
appear that are absorbed into the skin just moments later, guaranteeing a WOW effect! The wearer experiences an immediate feeling of
moisture and freshness.

These new ingredients give rise to a highly diverse range of possibilities. The formulation can be designed to make the water drop interact
with pigments to create special effects, for example: white “milk droplets” that lighten the complexion; green or blue droplets for a
fresh kick, combined with a cooling ingredient to amplify the effect
even further. Adding waxes creates melting textures with a sherbet
