Unit 1: Forces and Motion Study Guide
Motion:
1. How do we know if an object is in motion?
2. What is speed, acceleration, and velocity?
3. Know how to measure speed using the speed formula.
-Foldable
-Graphic organizer
-Textbook pages on Haiku and Faculty Page
Force and Friction
1. What is force?
2. What unit of measure do we use to describe force?
3. Net force
4. Know the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces.
5. Describe friction and the 2 subtypes of friction.

Gravity:
1. Who/what has gravity?
2. How are mass and weight different?
3. Does mass change gravity?
4. Do we weigh the same on other planets?

Newton’s Laws of Motion:
1. Know and understand the difference between Newton’s three laws of motion.
2. Be ready to give an example of each.

Essay Questions (at least 1 paragraph) choose 2:
1. If you drop a hammer and a feather on Earth what will happen? What will
happen if you drop those items on the Moon?
2. Explain what happens to an object that is under a balanced force? Give an
example of an object under a balanced force.
3. Explain why some of the egg cars traveled faster than others. Use the words
force, friction, and mass.
4. Using the image below. Assign each person a force (do not forget the unit), write
their force in each arrow, calculate the sum of forces and write that in the box.
Finally, explain if the object is balanced or unbalanced and why.
