THE UNIVERSITY OF UDINE MULTIMEDIA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY MULTIMEDIA COMMUNICATION Master’s Degree in Multimedia Communication The Course Professional Skills The Master’s degree course in Multimedia Communication at the University of Udine is one of the first Master’s courses belonging to the category known as LM-19 to strike a balance between technological and humanistic skills. The setting up of the course has filled a gap by creating a professional figure capable not only of understanding the technological requirements of the new media and handling programme content in an appropriate manner, but also of acting as a manager and innovator in the area of multimedia communication. The course has been designed as a natural continuation to and completion of the 3 year degree course in MST. However, the interest in radical innovation makes it suitable for students from 3 year degree courses in any department from Udine or any other Italian university. Some of the lessons are also attended by foreign students on Erasmus and Socrates programmes. The course aims to develop professionals with advanced knowledge of theory and its application who can both plan and organise events and play a creative role in the various fields of multimedia communication (computer, radio / TV, cinema, web, visual communication and advertising and art, music or theatrical events). It prepares highly specialised experts who can enter the world of digital communication, computing, audiovisual and multimedia systems with a sense of responsibility, a critical eye and a high level of understanding. It is thus likely that graduates will find a job in the world of the new technologies, as their professional skills are essential for the flow of information on the web, internet, satellite and mobile networks. 3 year Degree – Multimedia Science and Technology Consorzio Universitario di Pordenone per la Formazione superiore, gli Studi Universitari e la Ricerca via Prasecco, 3/a 33170 PORDENONE tel. 0434 52 30 72 fax 0434 27 502 [email protected] www.unipordenone.it The Course Professional Skills The Course responds to current trends in the modernization of communication via a systematic study of the interaction between different communication styles and technologies and is designed to prepare experts in the programming and creation of multimedia and audiovisual materials in the areas of culture and science, education, information and journalism, entertainment and marketing. The aim of this course is to develop professionals who have the cultural, technical and technological skills to work independently in the world of audio, TV, multimedia and computers and who have the ability to integrate the classical techniques of film making with a knowledge of the new digital information technologies. It thus seeks to provide the cultural groundwork, methodological instruments and technical skills to move with ease in the world of communication and of audiovisual and multimedia systems. The course is organised into 180 credits over a period of 3 years and is characterised by the presence of numerous activities and practical laboratory experiences and by a period of on-the-job-training at audiovisual and multimedia companies both in the private and public sectors. Students are encouraged to attend and enter their own work in festivals of all kinds to give them first hand experience in the most vital and up-to-date initiatives in the local area. Research International Relations Research Doctorate Laboratory of Audiovisual Design Laboratory of Artificial Vision Audio Laboratory Television Mobile Production Unit The research doctorate in Multimedia Communication was established in the university’s centre in Pordenone in the academic year 2006 /2007. With its focus on the new media, it follows naturally from the master’s degree course and completes an educational experience that is unique of its kind in the multimedia sector. The Research Doctorate, the 3rd stage of this experience, is a 3 year course sponsored not only by the faculty of Education but also the university consortium of Pordenone who have given the University of Udine a new laboratory for the exclusive use of doctoral students and researchers. The course also organises meetings and exchanges with universities and foreign students, conferences and seminars, research projects and international training courses. Anyone with a specialist degree or a degree from the old system can apply. Visual design is a new discipline which studies how to create graphics with the use of multimedia systems. The laboratory aims both to explore topics of interdisciplinary interest such as the various forms of contemporary expression based on technology (photography, video, cinema and special effects or electronic music) and to enable students to design a variety of products such as video or web interfaces and work with digital data. The artificial vision laboratory studies the algorithms that are needed to create images and video for the development of intelligent viewing systems. It focuses especially on algorithms for the calibration of TV cameras, the identification and recognition of objects, the modelling and study of complex scenarios and the airing in real time of audio / video data on the web. The laboratory has a long history of collaborating with projects financed by the European community (ATHENA 1996, VENFLEX 1999, MISS 2006, HAMLET 2008), the Ministry for Universities and Research (PRIN 2002,PRIN 2006), the Friuli Venezia Giulia region and industries such as Società Autovie Venete spa, Eidon spa, R.S.D. spa, Qnet srl, Video System srl. At the moment the laboratory is involved in the development of a) archive systems and the restoration and provision of multimedia documents in the area of digital libraries b) algorithms for IPTV broadcasting and interpersonal communication c) intelligent systems for the automatic interpretation of real life. The laboratory carries out research in the area of communication between man and machine based on non verbal sound (Auditory Display, Auditory Icons). At the moment it is looking at support systems for disabled people and at applications in the fields of domotics and edutainment, while in the field of digital libraries, the research group is concerned with algorithms for the reduction of noise in audio recordings and the integration of meta data with sound content. This unit, which is unique in the area and has few counterparts in other Italian universities, makes it possible to film events of a cultural or scientific nature or experimental work in a range of fields and has shown great potential both in education and in creating ties with the local community. The unit has contributed to the education of competent young professionals who can bring a high degree of specialisation to the workplace. Among its more innovative and ambitious initiatives is the NET TV of the University of Udine. This will create a station, due to start in 2008, which can provide information on the web about what the university is doing in the way of research and the promotion of knowledge. Study and Work experiences abroad The two degree courses offer a number of opportunities to study or have a work experience abroad. Given that the courses emphasise communication, analysis and the interaction of data, ideas, texts and technologies, as well as the connection between theory and practice, study or work experiences are highly relevant. The students also have the opportunity of studying their subjects for a certain period in a foreign university. Any exams they take there will then be recognised by Udine University. Work training can be done abroad with the Erasmus European placement programme or with the Leonardo programme for students who already have a first degree. It is also possible for students to study in universities outside Europe, such as Australia or Canada. Teaching Laboratories and Services for Students Photographic Laboratory Computer Laboratory Students can use a laboratory to develop and print black and white photographs. This has two enlargers, a darkroom exposure metre, safety lamps, acid baths and a developing tank with reels for the development of all the main types of film. The laboratories are equipped with computers that have OS windows, MacOSX and Linux, and Pro software for the authoring and mastering of DVD, 2D and 3D animation, web design and audio / video streaming. In addition to computers, students can access various kinds of multimedia (minidisk recorders, digital cameras, video cameras, illuminators) as well as a photographer’s studio with a full lighting system and chromakey backdrop. The library All the students and teachers at the University of Udine have access to library services, where they can find a rich collection of educational materials, including multiple copies of texts indicated by teachers and necessary for the preparation of exams in the degree courses at Pordenone. In the library it is also possible to consult monographs and periodicals in the history of photography from the Colombo fund, recently acquired for higher education, university studies and research by the consortium of Pordenone. Wi-Fi Net Computer services allows students with a laptop PC and a wireless Wi-Fi card, to connect up with the university LAN so they can use the wireless network without requiring a connection to the mains supply.
