CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION
Advanced nursing students the theory needed to perform skills and procedures
for the adult in NRS 171L. By consistently emphasizing the nursing process and
rationale, the format with each body system includes basic assessment or data
collection, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation.
Basic
nursing skills are reinforced. Advanced skills include those related to the
following body systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, genitourinary,
endocrine, special senses. Seven hours lecture per week.
CLASS SCHEDULE COURSE DESCRIPTION
Skills and procedures for the adult in NRS 171L. Includes basic assessment,
data collection, planning, evaluation, and documentation. Advanced skills related
to: cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, genitourinary, endocrine, special
senses.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1.
use the nursing process to perform basic and advanced nursing skills in a
clinical setting offered in 171 Medical-Surgical Nursing Lab

describe how to perform a beginning level assessment of patients with
diseases or disorders affecting the cardiovascular, respiratory,
neurological, endocrine, genitourinary, and special senses systems
3.
plan for care of patients by integrating basic and advanced care for
patients with the above conditions, providing medications and meeting
client’s needs for health care information and rehabilitation in a simulated
lab setting
4.
discuss how to implement care in a clinical setting for patients who require
care with disorders affecting the above body systems
5.
evaluate care with instructor, and add to the simulated plan of care
6.
document care in the style appropriate to a simulated clinical facility using
acceptable medical terminology
7.
define safe, ethical and legal principles of nursing in compliance with the
Nurse Practice Act and the rules and regulations of the Board of
Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Technician Examiners

REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS OUTSIDE OF CLASS
Over an 18 week presentation of the course three hours per week are required
for each unit of credit. Two hours of independent work done out of class are
required for each hour of lecture. Students will be required to complete the
