Types of Blood Cells All our blood cells have jobs to do. Red cells carry oxygen. Can you give this red blood cell a big bag to carry? White cells fight off viruses. Can you give this white blood cell a sword and shield? Platelets make scabs. Can you give this platelet a trowel? Making a model of blood We’re going to model our blood using sweets. 55% of our blood is plasma. Plasma is a liquid in which our blood cells float. Red blood cells Round red sweets represent our red blood cells. Weigh out 8 grams of red sweets (this should be about 200 sweets, you can count them if you like). White blood cells Marshmallows represent our white blood cells. White blood cells are about three times bigger than red blood cells. There’s about one white blood cell to every hundred red cells in our blood, so take two marshmallows. Platelets Bits of red sweets represent our platelets. Platelets are fragments of cells. Each one is about a fifth of the size of a red blood cell. Crush three red sweets into smaller pieces.
